He's a very good footballer but not a defender, he isn't looking to defend, it's the same as Walker on the other side. He'd rather play as a winger, and rely on pace to get himself out of trouble. Coentrão has a bit more than that to him as a defender, but you see my point.

Saying someone is preferred to Marcelo is not really an endorsement of their defensive ability, that guy is even more biased as an attacker, and also hot headed.

What I'm saying is even in modern football you rarely see top teams playing with such biased attacking fullbacks, which is why I don't think Spurs would play like that, or if they did, why they wouldn't win anything.

It happens, but I'd agree that it doesn't happen too often although that might change with the lack of quality FB's. Full backs still have a huge defensive contribution to make but I think most of them are so fast that they can cover. It might look uncontrolled but I wouldn't really see most of the attacking FB's as defensive liabilities (bar Schmelzer maybe)

Unless you have a super talented team with a lot of possession (important to not expose the defence as much) then I'd only go with that sort of player as a wing back. For example I think Coentrão or Walker could be excellent attacking alternatives in our system.
