Roma: Benatia out, two defenders in?
By Football Italia staff
Roma are willing to sell Mehdi Benatia for €30m and have already lined up a series of potential replacements.
The Morocco international has been constantly linked with a move away from Stadio Olimpico, with Chelsea and Barcelona the two sides most heavily rumoured to be interested in his services.
And Corriere dello Sport have revealed on Sunday that the Giallorossi are willing to let their star defender leave, but only for a fee of €30m.
If any club does come in with that amount, the capital outfit will reinvest that money in one, or maybe two, central defenders.
Toby Alderweireld of Atletico Madrid is top of that list, with Parma’s Gabriel Paletta, Dejan Lovren of Southampton and Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen also of interest.
---------------------------------
The money is fine, but I don't think it's smart to sell the most important piece in their defense. Until the last 3-4 rounds, it was the league's best defense and Benatia had quite a lot MOtM performances, securing the clean sheet almost single handedly on some of those matches.
Last summer's sales were fine and the mercato turned good for them, but we were talking about a team that ended outside the top5. Now they finally created a fine team and if they want to continue on this road they need to strengthen it by replacing the weaker players with better ones, not by selling the best. All due respect to Strootman, Gervinho, De Rossi, even Totti, but if there are two players Garcia won't be able to replace, those are Benatia and Pjanic. Unfortunately for him, these two are exactly the players who seem most likely to be sold.
