So it looks like there are heavy rumours of Messi leaving Barca (apparently there is serious drama behind the scenes) as per the La Gazzetta Dello Sport.

If he does become for sale, the saga will be interesting because I think you'll see a lot of unlikely buyers. Yes Man City, and PSG will throw their oil filled wallets at Barca, but I think you'll have many suitors. I think money only goes so far. If it happens, there will be an obscene price ($200-$300 million), but ultimately it will come down to Messi's preference. And frankly, for any team purchasing him (even an italian club), there is a business case.

Messi will fill an arena. For example, if you want to see San Siro packed, AC Milan could bring in Messi. If you want to see Stadio Olympico packed, Roma could bring in Messi. For us, bringing in Messi will make Juventus wish they built a bigger stadium, and will pack it. There will be huge endorsements for any purchaser.

Messi increases the value of a club by more than his transfer fee, or at least around the same amount. Also if there were an italian buyer, I am sure it would give extra incentive for these teams that don't have stadiums to build one because they will want to collect all of those ticket dollars. There will also be extra incentive for any 3rd party looking to invest in the club.

I am sure a foreign investor would inject some cash into Juventus for a minority position (or maybe a joint ownership agreement).

That being said there would be a similar businesses case for many teams in many leagues.

Ultimately the purchase of Messi means:

Matchday Revenue:
-Leverage to increase prices, and have higher attendance
Broadcast Revenue:
-More leverage for the purchasers' league in subsequent rights negotiations, and more leverage for a higher share of the broadcast dollars for that individual club.
-Broadcast revenue from international competitions
Commercial Revenue:
Increased Jersey Sales, Sponsorship deals, parties who will want to be affiliated with Messi's new club.
Tournament Prizes:
A team that acquires Messi will inevitably perform very well on the international stage. There will be increased cash flow from this source as well.

Therefore, I think if it does happen, you'd see some unlikely parties.

I've seen 300mln numbers pop up just few days ago. And I don't think there would be any surprise regarding that move, I'd expect only City, PSG or some club like that to bid so much and I highly doubt Messi would say no to a 20mln/year + contract.

But when I look overall at a situation I can only laugh or do a facepalm. Football has become a joke, I see too many people say 'lets pay x for him'. Hell, even I say that. But when I think about it, it's nothing but a pathetic situation when you see football players reach such a value. Doctors and most famous scientists aren't paid anything remotely close to those amounts, it's not even millions we're talking about. Then you see average football players making moves for 10-20mln euros. No matter how good you are, seeing a 300mln transfer is nothing but a joke and it just shows how whole football is becoming a shithole.

First of all, I really doubt there's any tangible truth behind the Messi-is-leaving rumors.

Second of all, if he does end up leaving, there is no chance he'll go to Italy. City, PSG, maybe someone like Chelsea, Monaco, or even United or Bayern, but I am willing to bet every cent I own on Messi not signing to an Italian club. No one can afford it, and even if some miraculous billionaire comes in to back the move Messi himself would not choose Italy.

Why are these rumours coming up? I've seen some Argentine/Aussie radio journalist guy saying he has it on good authority that Messi will leave at the end of the season. Tax evasion stuff? Problems with management? I just can't believe it would happen.

Messi has become bigger than Barcelona in my view, he basically hired their current coach and he fell out with Pep in his final season.

Glad to see them capitulating though, was sick to death of their holier-than-thou shit over the last few years

The last few years? They have been like that ever since they existed. In recent years they started winning, that's all. Hopefully they will go back to being the chokers they really are.
