I rate Defoe for who he is and said so often ( even if he is not a top player, and not proven in top level, not comparable to Rooney at all). Its not about nuances and overrated this or that, its FAR FAR from being overrated to be deemed better then Defoe. And Rooney has had the brand of being overrated so much that he gotten so much stick for it, to the point he was bit underrated. He is partly overrated, like many top players (doesnt deserve to be in top 10 balon), but fact of the matter is, he is a real quality player, as simple as that. Defoe doesnt reach up to him, and goalscoring is not much of an advantage when he has 1 goal more. He has more goals then Torres too, and that doesnt mean squat in valueing the players.

As I said, its about nuances, and you clearly shown you have intense dislike and biasm against him, illustrated with the above post. Not liking him, for whatever reason, is ok, I dont care, but trying to belittle him and say Defoe is better, is another matter.
How is Defoe unproven? He constantly gets into double figures in a top league and minutes played he has more goals than Rooney for England, if that is not proven then I really don't know what is.

As in for top team, absolute top level, delivering in that level, CL, Porthsmouth and now Tottenham isnt exactly that level, is it? And you seem to think Defoe has several seasons of scoring impressive levels, to have a true breakout, its when you really excell for a full season with 18-20 goals like figures that you do (and then take a step up in career and show if you good enough or not). Defoe at his best prior to this season has scored between 7-12 goals per league season. This season is his best so far, its up to him to keep it up. Its not exactly someone who is so proven in that level either, because those figures arent that special.

Rooney scores 11-16 ratio most league seasons, not exactly figures that differ or show inferior scoring. And he is appriciated for quite elsewhere then his scoring to say the least, too much of a withdrawn hardworking creative forward or even a midfielder in some of these seasons. Its now he is played as a center forward, and he is delivering the scoring the top scoring ratio (as is Defoe), already scored what he usually scores for the whole league season.

Defoe is not playing at top top level, Portsmouth and a top 10 Spurs or title winners, quite a difference. Just like there is a difference between (back then) EPL minnow Charlton and Sunderland, to Spurs is bit more mid upper level then smaller teams. When I say this, I refer to Bent, he scored 18 for Charlton, and scoring for fun for Sunderland, but he couldnt hack it at Spurs.

And NT bit, qualifiers/friendlies and NT tourno's is a different matter, Di Natale delivers in qfs, like does several non top players, totally another matter and level delivering in tourno, and I think you remember Rooney in 2004 dont you? Defoe needs to have displays like that to show he is the real deal in the NT.

Unfortunatly for Defoe his move to Manchester United fell through, would of showed Europe what he is capable of. Osman Defoe has never been given a shot for the NT, always a sub and Capello won't drop Rooney for him neither will play both. So how does one prove himself?
