Thanks, Jeeks and Menace. Any day a married couple can recognize their anniversary without rolling pins and kitchen cleavers should be a cause for celebration. ;)

Both, actually. :)

My grandfather/mother were immigrants and the only (or one of the few) in the neighborhood to vote Republican. They believed (and I believe) that government's role is to
1.Defend it's citizens
2.provide just courts
3.help those who genuinely need help, and can't get it elsewhere. (By this I mean, it should be primarly the responsibility of local institutions-churches, charitable organizations, etc--to provide relief. Only if they fail, should it be government's job to step in. Many respond with "but that's dehumanizing" to which I answer : no more dehumanizing than trapping whole families for generations on subsistence-level government "aid")

I also vote Republican, because I believe that no amount of government aid is going to help you if you are killed (by abortion, by euthanasia, by the government doing a lousy job at #1 above).
However, if you put yourself in the shoes of the poor, the charities and church institutions sometimes fail to provide the neccesary assistence, and is left with the Republican Federal government that does not do enough as it is to provide help for these people.

Also, how much do you care about the issues that effect the world as a whole, not just the citizens of our country?

It is possible, they would make a beautiful couple, but getting one's finger stuck in the boo-boo is a real amateur move, don't you think?
Maybe he was trying to see if Maria's back had that GI Joe button to make her grunt when she serves...

I make it a rule not to discuss politics here or on any forum--I only answered you Andy, because you asked me a direct question. :)

So.....last one, OK?

I am a Reagan Republican, not a Pat Buchanan Republican. I believe the good Lord has blessed the USA, and that we should help those less fortunate than ourselves around the world, if we are able. We do.
Sticking our heads in the sand is selfish and immoral.

We should approach foreign policy
1.with our friends: with humility
2.with our enemies: with strength

Again...last one. :)

You should be extremely careful with quotes like these. Common critisism with Americans is that they divide the world in America and the inferior rest.

That's what I have my wife for. :)

Though she doesn't natively speak Brazilian Portuguese, or even continental, but rather Azores Portuguese ... which has been pretty much frozen in time since the 1400s :dazed:.

Oh, and I love her to death. Today's our wedding anniversary.
Congratulations!

Is she from Portugal? Brazil?

I visited El Salvador in 1986. Reagan's buddies were in charge and fighting a nasty little civil war. I was incarcerated, beaten and tortured because my travel documents showed that I had just arrived from Nicaragua, a leftist state. I still blame Reagan for that holiday gone awry :D

No, no.......you misunderstood me. I am not saying that at all. I am purely saying that, if we with trillions at our disposal, can help a country with much less, then it is our moral right to do so. In NO WAY do I believe that the country we help is any less worthy of respect than we are.

This is why I do not discuss politics on forums---now I may have offended you, and for what?

I am so sorry.

Don't worry Lou, why did you think I tried to make my comment as objective as possible. But the anti-Americansism is now at its highest since...erm...ever. So we were bound to get pro/anti USA discussions.

So relax, amico mio :)
