Yes we all know about the history of minorities in America. We also know that minorities have more respect now than any other time in our history. That's a good thing.

But Andy, that can only happen if the people who are in that niche will accept them, and if those ethnic groups need to do away with their own culture in order to fit into ours, then you have a situation amongst their own. A situation that I somewhat alluded to in my previous post.

Well that certainly seems like a reasonable answer. However I don't think it has to be that way because, if you are more involved with your surrounding community, you fit in much better. It's not a matter of destroying your ethnic heritage, more like incorporating other aspects of society into your daily life.

Since this country was based on immigration, and integration of all types of people, is there really an American Culture, so to speak?

There's an American Way of Life, which depending on who you speak to, can be interpreted a number of different ways, but is there really an American Culture, one or a number of things that a vast majority of Americans do on a daily, or weekly basis?

Hmm good question. I think American culture is basically an integration of many other cultures, thus forming our own. I mean it's such a broad term, especially with the number of ethinic groups this country shares. There are also such a huge number of contrasting ideals that make a difference in society, as well as different traditions. There are so many contrasting views that form our culture. Damn this really makes you think.

This also brings up another answer: why we are hated so much.

Well if becoming part of the general culture is out of their reach because they would have to substitute one for the other, then I'm not sure. Personally I do not know why people would not accept them if they were to "reach out" to the other aspects of society.

Because there are a lot of people in this country Andy that are so set in there ways and unwilling to accept change.

See, I'm far more tolerant than a lot of other people in regards to this subject because my family is only 3rd generation Italian-Americans, whereas the majority of people here can trace their family history to pre-American Revolution.

I don't see this recent influx of immigrants as a "De-Americanizing of America". I simply see it as yet another example of the premise and principles that this country was built upon. Do I think that these people who come into our country should learn the language? Absolutely. Will I ostracize them for not doing so? No. After all, our forefathers had clearly stated that "All Men are created equal." I would hate to think of what this country would have become if not for the blending of cultures and heritages.


I can tell you this. I, nor 3 generations of my family, would not be alive today if it weren't for this country I adore so much.

let me see, there are many things to conside. culture is a big thing in some parts of the world. culture made possible that there is an Albania right now in the world. Culture is also the reason some other countries (mainly greece, no matter what they say ) dont like us that much. being proud of my culture i must say that i am a little redudant to forget it.

the second point to consider is the level of effort that the process requires. new immigrants have many other problems to consider. much more important that mingleing (sp) with the locals. experienced this one myself and even more seeing it on my parents.

i have also have had the pleasure to experience what the andre 3000 wanna be here is talking about. i m talking about serge here. people are seen with a strange eye when being part of another culture and esspecially when going against their own culture (which is a common case with the albanian and canadian culture) just as i said before i use the term culture a freely with canada.

also, there are some parts of my culture that i will not give up, ie watching soccer instead of hockey (to over simplyfy it a little)


all this without considering the fact that North America is mostly a consumeristic culture and in most cases being part of north american culture means easitng at McDonalds. dont get offended andy, thats just my point of view after living here for almost 3 years

Traditionally, Mexicans are hard workers. I do not have a problem with the Mexicans who LEGALLY emmigrate from Mexico, but I can not stand those chumps that immigrate here ILLEGALLY.

That is a common trait in our society, certainly.

Indeed, and I see your point. However hopefully people will be more willing to become incorporated with society as time goes on, and I think that the children of the new immigrants in this nation will have an easier time of reaching outside of their own home.

I can tell you this. I, nor 3 generations of my family, would not be alive today if it weren't for this country I adore so much.

I would have to bet that this is the story of millions of families.

Another reason this country is so damn great.

You're right, Andy.


The US is a great country, and I love it deeply. There are a lot of faults to it, which I'm sure you could find a great number of people here who would be more than willing to share them with us, but be that as it may, I wouldn't trade it for anything.

And I'm damn sure not ashamed to say it, either.

No country is perfect. The only one that was would have been was Atlantis, and, well, no one is even sure if it existed.
