Andy, asking a lot of these people to forsake their culture and heritage for the purpose of integrating into one type of society is not only too much to ask for, but it goes against the general premise of this great country of ours, which allows people to become American citizens while holding on to their culture.
And as far as these groups of people forming their own little niches in this country, wouldn't you say that a major reason for that is that a lot of the "old guard" Americans who have been here for more than a generation will not accept them as being one of their own, therefore creating a need for these sub-cultures so that they don't feel alone in this country?

Unfortunately you are misinterpreting what I'm saying. I have no problem with immigrants forming their own homes or niches, such as Greek Town in Detroit or Little Italy in Baltimore. That is perfectly fine by me and quite frankly I love having these places because it just adds to the ambiance of our culture. What I do not like, though, is people just staying exclusively in their own respective ethnic niche, making no attempt to reach out to other aspects of our culture. I have no problems with people of different origins living in their own respective area, however I just urge them to become accompanied with the surrounding culture, outside of their own niche, in a positive way. I see too many people not becoming familiar with the country they live in, not knowing one bit of English, and sometimes it's hard to accomodate to their needs. Of course they shouldn't feel alone, however I feel they should learn to adapt to the world outside of their own niche.

But they're not helping their own cause by shying away from the other aspects of society, outside of their own niche. If they would make an attempt to become a part of the general society I think they would be seen differently.
Yes we all know about the history of minorities in America. We also know that minorities have more respect now than any other time in our history. That's a good thing.

I think, and although I am far from an expert on the subject, that the reason that a lot ofthese ethnic groups try to keep to themselves and not become "Americanized", is the backlash that they would receive from their own communities for forsaking their culture in favor of our own.
Which brings me to another question.
Since this country was based on immigration, and integration of all types of people, is there really an American Culture, so to speak?
There's an American Way of Life, which depending on who you speak to, can be interpreted a number of different ways, but is there really an American Culture, one or a number of things that a vast majority of Americans do on a daily, or weekly basis?
