Boston has a stigma for being racist, especially towards its black athletes .

That has subsided somewhat, however up until the mid 90's, prominent athletes of color refused to come to Boston when they were free agents due to that belief.

It all started with the Boston Red Sox being the last baseball team to have a black ballplayer, and with an extremely racist southern owner (Tom Yawkey), and it just snowballed from there.

Although, the Celtics were the first to have an all-black starting basketball team, and were the first to have a black coach. But when you take into consideration that the Red Sox are THE preeminent sports entity in Boston, you can easily see where the racist tag comes from.
What do you expect from a town full of drunken Irish fools ???

Not all of us have that accent you know. I certainly do not, and i find the boston accent to be somewhat appalling.

I think that pado and Vinman can agree that I don't have that Accent.

That is so true, Sergio does NOT have that horrible accent. He actually sounds normal, if you can believe that.

At least you motherfuckers better agree

I never knew of Boston's racist tendencies, but I am somewhat surprised to see Burke calling anybody racist, as he advocates bigotry all the time. His posts have pissed all over Europeans, especially the English, pissed all over Catholics, mocked the Pope, and his favorite insult is calling people "gay".

So I guess the bigot is not a racist?????

While it may or may not (most likely not) be a dictionary definition, I suspect that perhaps Burkey here considers bigotry an all encompassing notion, thus excluding the need for more specific terms.

    Interesting anecdote, Sergio.

Personally, it didn't occur to me that Bostonians were racist during my stay (and those were the mid 90's). I actually found it a more tolerant city than most others I have visited in America (if only because it's the gay capital of the Northeast). But then again I can't say I developped a passion for the Red Sox while there.

Well, things have settled down considerably since the mid 90's, even the mid 80's.

However, you still have pockets of ethnic groups who are still fiercely racist, most notably the Irish Catholics in the south end of Boston, or "Southies" as they like to be called.

And as I had stated eariler, some of that bigotry had a lot to do with the black athletes of the time, most notably Bill Russell of the Celtics back in the 60's.

Although Boston has had its fair share of race riots during the pre-civil rights era.

I am now convinced that every society on earth is a racist society. In the USA, you have to keep any prejudices to yourself because you are finished if you are ever exposed as a bigot. Other places are not so sensitive about this and it is almost acceptable to be a bigot. Just ask our brother Burke :D

I'm surprised no one here on this thread has yet to mention the passing of the great Omar Sivori, who passed away nearly a year to the day of the passing of John Charles.

He was Maradona before Maradona existed. One of the greatest Argentinian players to ever step foot on a pitch.

    Suffer no more, Sir Omar.

I'm not entirely sure what you are getting at, but I would hardly give anybody credit for posting racist rants.

Then again, how do you know that he's just saying this to see if he can get a rise out of people.

Oh damn, I'm watching J-Lo's new video.

    Talk about getting a rise.
