What do you mean, Hector?
I'm saying it's brave how Andy posed next to you guys and even put the picture online, despite his obvious ... flaws.

This might be alarming to me if I was studying broadcast meteorology... which I'm not.

In actuality, the field I will be entering is risk management, or specifically weather risk management, which combines knowledge in meteorology, financial derivatives and statistics. Therefore, I'll most likely be working for a consulting firm or energy company.

TV meteorologists are worthless and looked down upon.
You're really full of it.

You're also really full of it, which is strange coming from a history major. Those come at a dime a dozen really. Unless you go to law school, I don't really see a purpose for you. So you know a lot about history... good for you. Lots of people here know tons of history, but it didn't take them a college degree in history to command the knowledge. Everybody can read a book and memorize facts, Hector.

I don't know how they teach history in America, but that's quite far from what I have to do. On the contrary, like I told you before, history majors in Europe need to write decent, scientific papers.

Right now I'm writing a paper on how the concept of AIDS has changed ever since 1995 (the year in which the HAART therapy was introduced) in both national prevention campaigns and scientific papers in Flanders and Emilia Romagna and has slowly evolved from describing a horrible and painful disease to describing a (be it huge) discomfort.

I don't quite see how there's no use for such a paper.

And I'll tell you what's the general use of historians. Since you're obviously thinking in quite simple terms and thus only consider a. saving human lives and b. making profit as decent parameters for defining whether or not something has a "use", I'lll put it in such simple terms as well:

historians, whether you like it or not, have two grand tasks these days. Number one is offering nuance, offering a general perspective to people. In an era in which everyone is extremely preoccupied with his own situation and in which people are losing a serious view on the world, we are very necessary. 9/11 wouldn't have happened had there been a bigger sense for nuance amongst those terrorists.
Job number two consists of basic trials. I don't particularly like this activity but historians often find themselves being judges of a past event. Any fucking Nazi has had his own trial in some sort of documentary. But you get the picture.

So yeah, there's a purpose for historians. Besides, you're just pissed because I said your balls are tiny. Which they are.

PS: there are very few seropositive heroin addicts in Belgium. Are you suggesting this as a career choice? I mean, they don't come at a dime a dozen now do they..

I really question the benefit of having large balls. The benefits of a huge penis are clear for all to see, but big balls? I don't know.
I was just joking and I got amused when Burke took it so seriously.

In any case, I don't see Andy responding to my post about the use of historians to society and I doubt he will any time soon, because, quite clearly, I'm right.

Look. I'm not going to put a picture of my balls online. I know you're a sick fuck at times, Bürke, but I'm not going to do it.

On a different note, any Trainspotting lovers out there?

Oh, sure. The next time Big Ballz Bethany is using my lumbar for a trampoline and my skull for Click Clacks, I'll be sure to tell her you said that.

Now you must make a distinction here. Scientific research in various fields is indeed useful, including historical changes in the perception of disease that might have to do with alterations in culture or improvement in medicine. Writing is obviously very important in life as communication is everything in a society. But the thing is, Andries, every single person in a well developed society should be able to write to a standard and communicate with the rest of the population. This whole semester I have been writing research laboratory abstracts based on topics in science I have never really studied. The whole purpose of the class is to tutor students in writing research papers that upholds the usual facets of the scientific community. While this might seem necessary to some, the class was a breeze because writing is something you've been taught to do since you were young. It's merely a necessity in a society.

Knowing something about history perhaps is not a necessity while being a part of a community, but it doesn't take much to study it. In fact, even if you barely watch the news everyday in your life, you are learning about news that will become history once the event is over, so absolutely any person with a sufficient IQ can study history. It's merely memorization of facts while understanding the world around you, which, in my opinion, is something every citizen in this world should strive for. Learning about historical topics is something every reasonable citizen should be open to.

But the whole point of my rant after you alluded to me being arrogant about my field of study, is that historical facts are easy to obtain. The only necessity in being a mediocre history major is the ability to read and retain facts. Anybody has the ability to do so. That's the reason why I say history majors come at a dime a dozen, as the necessary skills are skills that anybody in a working society must have to succeed at absolutely anything. Verbal communication and written communication are both integral to any job you may want to persue, especially in business. If you're a business major and cannot communicate worth a shit, you are shit.

No matter how many historians there are in this world, 9/11 still would have been a part of our history. A "no-arbitrage argument" to counter your statement is that if the world was full of historians, there would still be personal bias, religious bias, and bias between ethnicities as that comes with the human race. Therefore, 9/11 would still have been possible.

While I do admit that such research is beneficial to society, along with the verbiage that sum up the research, I think it must be said that your paper involves sifting through documents and researching information. Or in other words, discovering details you don't possess in your historical database in your brain. My point is that history majors are not the only group of people who could perform such a task. That's all. Give Greg or Burke the task and wage to complete a report on the cultural fascinations with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, and they should be able to produce a respectable report. But give different citizens material in physics, and they won't even be able to understand it unless they have taken several courses that prepare them for the calculus and physics involved therein the material.

Andrew, you are one of the most arrogant and self-centered people I have ever known or met, you think your opinion is fact and what you say is law, without exception. If you fail to see this, or fail to stop being this way, then you fail to be that which you proclaim to hate.

The unintelligent, the close-minded, and the idiot.

I think you need to take a long look at how you interact with people and how you separate yourself from people around you. Look at your friends, the people who would be there, the people that would not, and the people that would not be there when you really need them, those are the ones that you think are your real friends. Not me and not Enron. But Corey....you hate on him day after day, but if it came down to it, he would be there for you, but you wouldn't for him, and the major reason is because he can't find Minnesota on the map. Who is to say he is any better or worse than you? Because when it comes down to it, 99% of the time, people would rather be around persons like him rather than you, and 50% of the time, I'd rather be around people like him, rather than people like you. So you had better start opening up your brain and looking around you at the people that actually make up your life rather than talking about random people you don't know.

PS - History is the most important thing in the world because the whole world is based on history and the whole world is history.

PPS - If you do choose to respond to this and you ever use the word "hypocrite" or "hypocritical" or tell me I'm a piece of shit or something like that when I said what I had to say without using either A) bad language or B) personal direct attacks, then you will find it quite odd that your phone will remain quiet from the ear-piece and the microphone for quite a long time.

Peace.......in the Middle East...
