So...by definition they have to be cultured in the United States because they ARE the culture, they are the demographic.
Look:
• the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or other social group
That is waht I'm talking about, the culture is the whole, not a subgroup, an unintelligent person can be cultured in their own culture because they ARE the culture.
A) Customs: Sould food, Sunday football, et cetera
B) Arts: Bluegrass Music
C) Achievements of a Particular Nation, People, or Other Social Group: Voting, Black politics, Harley Davidson owners/riders, NASCAR fans, drivers.
Now those are all part of the American Culture, Andrew, and I bet you hundreds of thousands of people know more about all of those than you do, but, as always you would not consider them "cultured" in their own culture.

But that doesn't necessarily mean they are cultured in our country as a whole, as in knowing anything about our history. They aren't part of the culture if they don't know anything about it. I might not know anything about Bluegrass Music culture, so you could say I'm not a part of it. But I do know it's part of the history of the United States and therefore part of the culture.

Yea, and you know nothing about the history of Bluegrass music. Some people might know that the Louisiana Purchase was the part of our history, but not know exactly what it encapsulated. So by that definition, you are not cultured in our own culture, and neither am I.

First of all, you can't be "cultured" in anything, the word doesn't exist in that context. Andy and Burke are mistaking the definition of Cultured with that of Culture. Culture is a noun, while cultured is an adjective. One means to know and understand the finer things in life, be educated , etc. The latter is a word to describe a society's beliefs, languages, traditions. They aren't the same word and they aren't interchangeable. I think what he means to say is that being "educated" in another culture can make one's self more cultured. Then again he didn't so what do I know. That said, please continue.
