North Beach landslide forces evacuations

(02-27) 15:17 PST SAN FRANCISCO -- Officials are working to stabilize a cliff on the south side of San Francisco's Telegraph Hill after a 75-foot-wide chunk of the hill gave way this morning, sending an avalanche of rocks into buildings on Broadway and rendering seven structures uninhabitable.

No one was hurt in the 3:30 a.m. slide, which pushed rocks down the North Beach hillside into a pile that city officials estimated to be about 25 feet deep and 36 feet high. More than 100 residents were evacuated.

The ground gave way just below a condominium building on Vallejo Street, on what officials described as a slope prone to slides. Rocks crashed down into the rear of Broadway Showgirls Cabaret, next to a residential hotel. Authorities red-tagged the club, meaning no one can go inside, and did the same to the Vallejo Street condos, three sets of flats on Montgomery Street and two other buildings on Broadway.
