Shit, I have to get Twinrix (Hep. A and B) shots tomorrow, but those don't really affect you. I just picked up the malaria pills, they're huge. It says that I should eat it with food, so tomorrow I can eat a nice plate of pasta alla marinara...ermm malaria. :frown:

Thanks though.
my brother is taking malaria pills as well as he is going to peru next month. On the packet the instructions where to take one a week on a full stomach

Has anyone ever taken pills for preventing malaria before? If you have, could someone let me know how big these suckers are?

Vacations to the Carribbean are a waste of money; it seems that it would be more healthy to create open sores on your feet and submerge them in a truckstop toilet rather than head south.
I've been to the Carribbean several times and I have never needed to take that nonsense.

when I went on my honeymoon cruise in the Carribean, neither myself or my wife had to take any meds before the trip

getting the Hep shots isnt a bad idea though.....the medication lasts for years, and you never know when you could come into contact with Hep B (I probably have the greater chance in the field I'm in )

Meh, never kills to be overly cautious.

Apparently malaria is a growing problem down in the Dominican, so it's best if I take them. And yeah, you could probably use the Hep. B shot, seeing as you've got to deal with junkies and the like.

Thanks guys. :pint:

Not pills, but I did get a large injection that also fought off Dengue Fever and other tropical shit. It was nice not having so much as a head cold for the next four years.
There is a shot for dengue fever???? My brother spent five days at the hospital last year because of that damn disease

Didnt they ask you to get a yellow fever shot? thats the most common one...

What part of the Dom rep. are you going to?

And its always useful to take some B12 vitamin pills two weeks before you leave... it REALLY helps with the mosquitoes

Great, another one. I'm going to Punta Cana (Bavaro), and thank you for the vitamin B12 tip, since mosquitos are the biggest disease vectors.

Lol if youre going to Punta Cana you wont need any hepatitis or malaria or anything because you'll be surprised to see how touristic that place is. Ive never been to Bavaro (I went to the Club Med) but Ive heard its a really big place and very fun. The beaches are beautiful. Youll have a lot of fun so stop worrying about getting some weird third world disease because it wont happen.

I highly recommend the B12 pills though because mosquitoes are a pain in the butt

Well I suppose youd need those if youre planning on going to any rural areas... but you wont even have to leave the hotel because everything you could ever need is gonna be in there already, and because there isnt anything to do or see on the outside.

Are you going with your friends?

Yeah, but I might go golfing (on the outside), depending on the cost. And yeah, I'm going with friends.

Still, you wont need those shots. I know they say its better to be safe than sorry but dont waste your time and money. Youll probably be drunk the entire week anyway huh :D
