thats the thing erik, they were the best team in the world, but when you look at the squad list you cant help but wonder how was that possible.

And it wasn't Ajax who relegated 10 years later :weee:
and how does that have anything to do with this?

Football was still a team sport back then, more so than now. In my opinion at least, combination football was far more dominant and teams relied less on talent and strength of individual players than they do in modern times.

and how does that have anything to do with this?
Oh it doesn't, I just like saying it.

So long as your first touch was good, you could play in that team. If you take a close look at how they played back then, you needed only a few things: great passing skills and handling speed. If you had a good technique, it was helpful, but you didn't need it as much as you do now. You had more space back then, didn't have to take on defenders unless you were a winger or something and even they (Overmars for example) relied largely on speed.

You do know that Ajax was the best team in the world at that time, don't you?
i know, i know. though they were the second best. but thats the point im trying to make, where are those guys now? sure, half of them retired, some even played for other top clubs. but musampa, bogarde, finidi :undecide:
same will be with the greece team from 2004, some ten years later people will look to that squad and think "who the fook are those guys and how did they manage to be that good?"

Greece was never good and that's quite the offensive remark for Ajax fans since the Charisteas debacle :D

Not a good comparison.

Ajax won the CL in 1995 and lost the 1996 final on pk's. Their two-year run as kings of the world can not be disputed. Everybody acknowledges their supremacy. If people look back after 10 years and think Ajax had a weak roster, then that is because they have become accostumed to superteam conglomorat like Real Madrid or Chelsea (who have yet to really win anything).

Greece was shit on rye in Euro 2004. Everybody knew they were shit. It won't take 10 years to come to that realization. People were saying it 2004, 2005, are saying it in 2006 and will always continue to say it.

half of the team of so-called kings of europe were shit. thats what amazes me and thats what im trying to say. and no im not used to superstar conglomerates, as juventus that that season had the likes of pessotto and torricelli, not superstars by any means. where as bogarde, kanu, kluivert and ronald de boer were all shit. maybe not all, but bogarde was THE shit

Superteam conglomorates did not exist in 1996. I'm talking about you, today, looking back at a 1996 roster of players and thinking that they turned out to be crap players. At one time they were all solid players. Danny Blind was an Ajax god, he could do no wrong, but when you compare him to todays cast of characters such as Ronaldinho, Eto'o, Ballack, etc. you think "how could anybody win with Danny Blind?"

im not talking about danny blind, he was a good, maybe even great player. but kluivert, bogarde, kanu. top of the world in their teens, bunch of nobodies in their early 30s.
Some players just have that. Del Piero has it to a lesser extent. Kluivert's technique was (and is) sublime, but since he got injured he just hasn't been able to get back to that level, which is a shame.

Back in the days, Kluivert was a world class forward. In line with Henry nowadays. He just lost it.

Fliakis is hereby banned until further notice.

His inability to understand that some palyers were great for a fleeting moment and that some were great within the concept of team, has left him a footballing eunoch.

Good day, Fliakis, you will be missed.

i do understand that. just when watching the game yesterday i occured to me that wow, i mean those players (well except bogarde) were so good when they were so young and now they're all simply gone. i do understand what you all are trying to say. just find it amazing that so many people from that great team lost. and to a lesser extent that some of those players were simply rubbish yet fitted perfectly in that team.
