Greg, haven't you defended Chavez in the past? Or am I just confusing your distaste for Pat Robertson with a defense of Hugo?

Yeah. Chavez is a dufus and he's making his country look ridiculous. Problem is that he's getting rounds of applause because everyone else in the world is too pussywhipped to stand up to Bush and call him on being the imcompetent and asshole president that he is. So Chavez is getting to say the things others have had to bite their lip on and have secretly wished to say themselves. So even some crank like Chavez will get support -- support he doesn't deserve -- because Bush has polarized the world so awfully.

So in that sense, Chavez -- at least to the degree that people think him relevant -- is Bush's own creation, IMO. Part of the grand problem with the Bush administration is that they give cranks like Chavez the podium they never deserved. If Bush handled things properly, the world should have outright castigated Chavez and condemned him to the backwater pisshole he belongs in. Instead, he's become a spokesperson for the disenfranchised. Nice job, Georgie.

But yeah... never defended Chavez other than to think Pat Robertson's public call for assassinating heads of foreign states was criminal in a civilized world.

I'll agree that Bush is an asshole and a bad president. His domestic policies are pretty bad as well, ask a Katrina survivor. Still he isn't the devil, he's not Hitler, or the Candyman.

I would call Bush evil to the degree that he is blind to evils and unwilling to recognize and stand up to them. Case and point: Dick Cheney, and even moreso: Paul Wolfowitz, whom I hold responsible for more evil than anybody else in the whole Iraq fiasco. But calling GWB evil also gives him too much credit. I see him more as an incompetent front man/puppet/stooge who was unable to divine right from wrong and to take action against bad advice and bad deeds from bad people.

And because there's no accountability for bad deeds and bad decisions -- no checks and balances on a whole lot of levels (if you thought Lega Calcio was bad...) -- essentially the inmates are running the asylum.

However, there are demonstrations against Chavez from time to time in Caracas. But that's not enough to stop Chavez from throwing his influence around the barrios and creating a fearful enviornment whose only benefit is medical care from Cuban physicians.

Under the Chavez regime, the crime rate in Caracas rose exponentially... that just says it all.

Still don't know how anybody could support such a statistic..
