I was working on old news and mixed up the terrorist claim with the Zidane interview yesterday afternoon...my apologies.
But Zidane has apologized for his ridiculous act and afterall it was Materazzi who insulted his family in some way shape or form. Of course you would be the only one who would applaud that, wouldn't you.

this happens all the time in football, jokes about players wives abound and it is part of the game to try and throw an opponent off his game, harsh reality but true. zidane, being the heartbeat of the french team, with his fragile temperament was always going to be a target. at the end of a career where he has endured this sort of thing on a weekly basis, you would think he could have risen above it for 10 more minutes
Zidane apologized to the children who saw his act, he DID NOT regret his act and stated he would do the same if the situation arose again. So, no I do not buy his little apology and yes, I think Materazzi is brilliant for getting ZZ to lose it.
Just like the Belgian player that got Kluivert sent of in WC 1998 by calling him a "Rapist" and provoking a punch. Brilliant!
And I suppose it's all fine and dandy when an idiot such as Luis Figo lies and incites an investigation by stating our very own GM was talking with referees during the halftime of a match. So I'm in my Italian class on Monday after my teacher took a 6 week absence to travel back to her home town of Viareggio. She really doesn't follow football much at all (being the cultured teacher and former head of languages for the SF school district that she is), but she was all over the World Cup. And how could she not in her household -- given all the screaming? But damn, the woman is from the birthplace of Marcello Lippi, and I had to tell her that.
So in class she goes around the room and each student has to speak a little Italian of essentially "what I did while the teacher was on vacation" sort of thing. A number of people talked about watching the WC Final the day before. Then one student starts talking about her recent travels to Italy, saying, "Io e mio fiancée siamo andati..."
To which my teacher interrupts, "Fiancée?! That's French. They lost. This is Italian class."

As professionals are suppossed to be able to control their emotions and focus on their job. Once they allow fans and opponents in their heads, it is career over.
Think of a guy shooting free throws at the NCAA Tourny and when the crowd chants "Crim-i-nal, Crim-i-nal" to the shooter who had a DWI a year before. Shooter runs away crying. Yeah, let's offer that guy a contract

Zinedine Zidane, for some unknown reason, is known as one of the best to ever wear the Juventus shirt. However, the greatest thing Zizou ever did for our club is leave. Sure he was a great player, very skilled and creative. However, the insistence that all attacking play go through Zidane left us empty-handed more often than not. In 5 years with Zidane, we won a meager 2 Scudetti. Period. In 5 years since ZZ left, we won 4 Scudetti. Real Madrid has had a fairly bare trophy cabinet since "the great one's" arrival.
Yes, by leaving us, ZZ made possible the capture of Pavel Nedved and Gigi Buffon. Nedved, being the direct replacement has been twice the Juventino ZZ was. ZZ was always a great National team player, but never could make that translate fully to Serie A. In the season which followed his 1998 World Cup title ZZ was unable to lead Juventus any higher than 6th place in the Serie A and an Intertoto Cup berth. His shsortcomings were made all the more obvious when, until November 8, 1998 Juve was alone in first place and Del Piero tore up his knee at the end of the Udinese match. From there it was a series of losses and draws that saw our Juventus slide down the table without any leadership from our silent French superstar.
So what should I do now? Hail him for his 5 years of service or tell him to just leave in disgrace? I think I know.
