Their offense completely sucked and ran out of gas in elimination rounds, but their midfield and defense held up well. They are clearly not among the best teams of this tournament -- that I reserve for Italy, Germany, and Argentina. But saying "such a bad team" is a bit of a stretch, particularly given the competition.
Greg,

Portugal could also have been placed in the group you mentioned, and had the wildcard being one "Big Phil" Scolari, who I think is the best coach in the entire tournament

I watched all of the Portuguese games, and beginning with the Angola game, I was disappointed. The quality they showed at Euro 2004 was barely visable. I expected them to come into this tournament a better team than 2 years ago, and more refined. It didnt happen

I have blasted my own favorite team many a time, and still believe that they havent played to their potential (hopefully tomorrow they will), and have even questioned some of Lippi's choices...I thought we could have put Germany away much earlier than we did, had we not had a brain fart the entire second half

Anyways, I wasnt picking on Portugal, just a bit disappointed in them, thats all

Vinni, luck or no luck they got there. Who did Italy have to beat? They had the easiest path of all teams.

Australia? Ukraine?

Common! they didn't even get a proper challenge until Germany. While Portugal had to get through Holland and the English.

I criticized Scolari for fielding pretty much his favorite family from 2004, and ignoring the likes of Ricardo Quaresma, João Moutinho, and Manuel Fernandes who have really come to the fore in the past couple of years. Ultimately, I think it cost him in youthful energy and creativity (even if they came up gimpy at the Euro 2006 U-21s).

The Euro '04 squad was better...at least offensively. But play 4-5-1 every time and you're bound to have few opportunities up front.

better question...

how the hell did Portugal get so far in this tournament with such a bad team ???
I agree completely. Portugal continues to play like absolute crap and did not deserve to be in the Semifinals. Luck of the draw I suppose. Even though I absolutely abhor Germany, I'm glad they gave those divers a good beating.

And thank God Capello left so we have no chance of suffering with that useless hag Ronaldo in our team. Sheesh, what a ballhog and diver.

C'mon, Andy. This "absolute crap" routine is getting a bit old and it has no legs. Mexico, England, Netherlands (the last two being defeated twice in two straight elimination round competitions) ... I'll take that "absolute crap" over the others anyday.

Unless you think Ukraine and Australia deserved to be in the semis instead...

Blind rage when you've got an axe to grind makes you, well, uh, blind. If you said they were weak on offense and couldn't find their lone forward if their lives depending on it, that would be one thing. But the "absolute crap" line comes from the gut, not the head, proving that you're not thinking but instead reacting emotionally. Just like every can't-get-over-it wanker who booed everytime C Ronaldo touched the ball. (Ronaldo apparently got on the phone with FIFA's disciplinary committee today and got Rooney a two match ban too... :rolleyes2)

So just get over it. Admit it: you love to hate the squad, and they defeated teams you liked better.

I  American envy.

In my opinion, I have always thought, and will contend to this day, that Portugal was, and is an overrated squad. That "Golden Generation" of Portugese Superstars produced very little during their tenure on the national team, and even all of my portugese friends will admit that they are, and have been for the last couple of years, the dirtiest and least classiest team in Europe.

That being said, I'm hearing rumours that Klinsmann may end up being the coach for the US.

We couldn't be that lucky.

Easiest path of all teams, huh??

Angola and Iran.

That's all I have to say.

Angola and Iran.

Oh, and playing an uninspired and overrated England with a man advantage for 60 minutes and not being able to score a goal speaks volumes about Portugal.

Ze T, you can stop pissing about Italy's easy path. When you win the "Group of Death" you deserve some benefit. Did you see Italy getting Saudi Arabia, Togo, or Angola? Hell no. And, If the French had done better in the group, it would have been Italy-France in the Quarterfinals, so cry to FIFA, not to the Vinman.

Potugal? Not bad, but at the end they played like a bunch of Greeks.

The dirtiest and least classiest bit is b.s. It's pretty clear people were quick to jump all over C Ronaldo when FIFA gave Rooney a two-match suspension. And a number of people think Portugal beat the Netherlands because it was purely their idea to turn the match into a hockey brawl. Portugal gets sh*t for diving. And yet Henry not only pulls the same crap -- but unlike Portugal, he gets the calls to go his way against Spain and Portugal that ultimately change the match outcomes. But they've earned their place, of course. Big difference, right?

I've said all along that Portugal aren't in the same league as a few of the teams in this Cup. But for people to come out suggesting that they are no better than Iran is pure horsesh*t. As is this bogus suggestion that they are a dirty and classless team ... and as if that's the only reason for their success. Spain gets far more credit, and they've accomplished half as much.

Count the number of teams that have made it to the semi-finals in the past WC and Euro and get back to me.

I think Nick made about the fairest assessment here.

Henry should be doing a lot more than what he's done -- other than being offsides all the time. Part of that could be because he's trapped in Domenech's horrible system. But for a guy to be that vocal about not being a woman who doesn't dive at the CL final recently, and then do what he's done in this WC? He deserves every mockery coming to him. :agree:

Dude, in all fairness, don't give me this crap about American envy when you are yourself an American. I mean WTF is that, Greg? Jesus.

For your information, everybody besides yourself seemingly knows I absolutely abhor England; a team that features the likes of Beckham and Rooney, as well as Joe Cole who my best friend called and made look like an imbecile. Yes, Greg, I absolutely love those players and the English media presence entrenched within our own football community here in the States. I also love nations such as Iran and Mexico, just for the fact I adore nuclear weapons supposedly being pointed at my homeland and our greatest CONCACAF rivals excelling against a side that is about as neutral as anybody. Yeah, thats right, American jealousy against Portugal. Right, Greg.

No offense, but that's the most absurd post you've ever made.

Divers, cheats, lackluster performances, a penalty shootout, weak group stage, absolutely lucky circumstances that brought your 'team' to the Semifinals, I have to say, Greg, that Portugal simply did not deserve to be in the Semifinals. I mean, why on earth would I have anything against Portugal? besides the fact they're a bunch of divers and classless pricks such as Figo.

You know me, Greg. I'm fairly obejective when it comes to international football, and what I see is simply what I see. And what I see is a Portugal side that had a ridiculously easy group, a lackluster and referee-inspired performance against Holland, a lucky victory on penalties against England, a boring loss against France, and a dismal and embarrassing performance against Germany. Not to mention 24 yellow cards, setting a world record in World Cup competition. And more than 10 blatant dives. I'm sorry, but Portugal is just embarrassing.

These Portugal fans need to stop pissing about easy paths. FFS, they had one of the easiest groups ever, considering Mexico did not acheive full-form until their game against Argentina.

But whatever the case, Portugal will be known for being embarrassed by Germany in the third place match, and being the only team to have ever had two simulatneous divers in the same box during one respective match. Well done Scolari, well done.

But at least Maniche was good.
