I caught one of those ESPN "World Cup Live" post-match shows recently. I thought Julie Foudy was actually making some sense in pointing out that Italy was not playing to the Italian stereotypes against Ghana. Then Alexi Lalas, the only American who ever played in Serie A no less, said that we should not be fooled and it was still just Italy's same-old, same-old of conservative tactics.
It just goes to show how difficult racial stereotypes are to break -- when we can't even see beyond age-old stereotypes about national team football tactics.
