I sincerely doubt Arena really thinks Italy use such a style. He scouted them himself during a bunch of friendlies and I'm fairly certain he knows that this Italian side plays quite differently from those of previous years. This interview right here is probably nothing more than just a typical media smokescreen in which Bruce is trying to throw people off track. I still have faith in his abilities despite the loss Monday.

If he seriously believes Italy will play with catenaccio, I should be the National Team coach.
ahh the george w.bush tactic of making the world think you are an idiot while all the time being a wily fox:D

Actually, I know a high level coach who was the manager of an olympic development team in Maryland, and his lack of knowledge of the European game is quite appaling. He stated that Italy, Germany and others always play the same way, with the former always playing solid defensively and putting 11 behind the ball at all times. It just boggles my mind how such an esteemed coach could say such a thing, while I, as a no-name college student, has to lecture one of the top coaches in the state on how Italy and other nations actually play nowadays. FFS, no wonder we aren't a top nation in football.

look on the bright side andy, you have found your calling in life to educate your fellow countrymen. if this guy can get such a position with little or no knowledge, just think what you can achieve.

Then the coach said, "Why can't you spics support our country?"

Yeah, because Fabiana was there. That ignorant fuck.

Then after Fabi corrected him, I called him a wop and he proceeded to go home and watch the Tony Danza show.

I caught one of those ESPN "World Cup Live" post-match shows recently. I thought Julie Foudy was actually making some sense in pointing out that Italy was not playing to the Italian stereotypes against Ghana. Then Alexi Lalas, the only American who ever played in Serie A no less, said that we should not be fooled and it was still just Italy's same-old, same-old of conservative tactics.

It just goes to show how difficult racial stereotypes are to break -- when we can't even see beyond age-old stereotypes about national team football tactics.

:howler:

Just to give you a mental image of the neighborhood where I live...

After Mexico defeated Iran 3-1, I got in the car to drive down to the local Safeway to grab something for lunch. Standing at an intersection are four kids, none older than 6, waving Mexico flags -- and as cars were driving up San Jose Ave. off the I-280 off ramp, they would honk their horns and wave. Getting into the spirit of the thing, or perhaps just the absurdity of the situation, I honk at the kids too. But instead of waving back, they just stop with this look at me of, "WTF, gringo? Do we have to send out an AMBER Alert on you?"

Yeah, just remember who owned who last World Cup, my little chalupa homies.

So I grabbed a four-pack of pollo tamales from the cooler of the Tamale Lady who hangs out in front of the Safeway and headed home.

Indeed. However, this guy has spent years going to coaching schools and sessions, attaining a license to be a manager of such sides. It takes a lot of work and you have to be good on the pitch.

Shame they fail to realize you don't have to go to a damn coaching school to know the game.

another reason to dislike Bruce Arena, the grand poobah of USA soccer....

from channel4-

yes, Italy is going to be soooo... afraid of the USA offense, which showed absolutely NOTHING on monday

get a clue, Brucie...Italy wants the full 3 points

I guess he didnt see the Italy-Ghana game...he must have been too busy passing out tissue boxes after their game...but if he had, he would have noticed that Italy wasnt exactly playing catenaccio
If he's for real he's pretty dumb if he thinks the Italians are going to sit back and wait to get some of their final points for total security against the Czechs when they can fairly easily get 3 points against the US and be done with it.

The Saudi outfit is much cooler, beats the shit out of the all black one. Stylish, colorful, ornamented. Whereas the Brazilian is all yellow with tan lines, I mean summon some creativity already.

I have in my posession several flags. One of Portugal, Italy, Sweden, Brazil, Canada, and Pakistan. I feel it's my responsibility to show some color around here, so just for the sake of that, I'll be sporting different fags troughout the tourny. Anyone know how I can tie a flag to my car? :D

This World Cup makes everybody crazy. We have Erik posting nipple shots of busty Brazilian women and Zé T confessing his desire to parade around town with different men of the gay persuasion. ;)

Catch the fever! :p
