well the federal government has a plan to reduce emission to the standarts of the kyoto accord by 2050

and the provincial government wants to reduce emissions by 30% in 2020

the municipality of toronto (and ontario in general) had the chance to divert 84 of its trucks with garbage that go daily to a landfill in michigan towards incinerators, yet they decided to just send them to another landfill in ontario

we recycle about 30% and when i moved into a house my father had to ask around on how the recycling program worked becuase we recieved no information from the authorities

this is in a country where 70+% of the people define global warming as A major issue
I hear you. In Norway every household has 3 different trash cans and they make you recycle. When I moved here, at least in the cities, there's no such thing. People toss their bags of trash in the street, garbage people come and pick them up. There's no separate bins, nothing like that. And I thought we'd come some way with this by now.

i agree with you in principle, however, when you think about it, it would be more benefitial if people decided to become more fuel efficient without changing their lifestyle (which to a certain extent is possible). dont get me wrong, i do not think al gore is the next best thing since ... well you know ... sliced bread, but the republicans who bring out those points are even worse
Yeah I know what you mean. We (as in the developed population) over-indulge and take advantage of the plentiful energy resources we have. That "One-Tonne Challenge" thing that Rick Mercer was pushing for was a start. If everyone started eliminating the little things like leaving lights on and shit, it would certainly make a bit of an impact.

did you hear about that 1 fluorescent lightbulb that caught fire? apperantly the fire marshall said that nobody should be concerned however the story was in the news for 1 week
 Yeah, my mum just said something about it this morning because there's one in the basement. Probably just a freak occurence, I hope.

fuck, all my lightbulbs are fluorescent
Most of ours are too except for reading lights/lamps. The funny thing is that when company comes over the flourescent bulbs in the kitchen tend to give the food a glowy radioactive green tinge, so we change to a regular bulb with company around.

the movie is just like a micheal moore movie
 That's kinda like saying the movie Apollo 13 is just like Battlestar Galactica.

Oh man, does that stuff drive me nuts. When I lived in Berkeley, where people are the worst about this sort of thing, I hung out with three female grad students who lived with this one recycling nut job who moved in with them. He had about 8 or 9 different sorting algorithms instituted for trash: wet, dry, composte, recyclable, #1 & #2 plastics, plastics #3 and over, etc. It drove his housemates so nuts that when he was out of town, they dumped everything in the same trash container as a sort of protest.

There are limits to trying to do the right thing and just being practical. Not to mention that I think the idea of recycling is far more appealing than the actual act has in terms of any environmental value. Some things are worse to recycle than not, and whetever happened to "reduce" and "reuse" before you get to "recycle"?

I have three different color-coded garbage bins I have to put out each week for the city of SF -- regular trash (black), recycling (blue), and composte (green). That's about my limit.

oh, my bad. yeah I have those too, only difference is the color spectrum isn't as good, right?

so what's the relation to those tubes?
Yeah, exactly, they give off this weird glow. Both the tubes and the bulbs are the same, only one's longer I guess. :D

I recall the conventional wisdom with the tubes was to let them stay on forever, cause they wear off when you turn them on and off. Is that also the case with the bulbs we have?

I agree with you, and I think the main point is to do *something* rather than *nothing*. If they want three different cans that probably helps them in some way, so I don't mind it. And if you don't always sort that carefully well so be it. At least it's supposed to help.

Sorry man, I haven't the foggiest. They last long as is, even when you turn them on and off frequently. Maybe that's why they had the tubes on all the time in elementary and high school.

Incidentally, what do you do, Max?
What do you mean, Martin? :D

If you're talking about the bulbs, then I turn them off when I'm not using them. I find that they're too bright sometimes, hence I don't use them for reading. It hurts the hell out of my eyes.

That's funny :D

No, I meant in a more existential sense. Like what do you do in the morning after breakfast (if anything).
