First, Roberto Clemente was better than Willie Mays. It's not all about the long ball, you know.

Second, while 700 Home Runs is an astronomical feat, only about 250 should count. Look at Bonds in his Pittsburgh years when 28 Homers was a fantastic year. Then, the steroids come in and the guy is popping out 60 per year.

Excuse me, could we stop talking about the most worthless, pointless, stupid, disgraceful, lazy, disgusting, torrid, idiotic sport in the entire universe?!

Thank you. :D

Youre right, Pado. After 88, the careers of many ball players has improved and prolongued with the use of steroids. Clemente, Mays, Rose,Williams and many old timers were natural...i dont mean to detract Major leagues actually, but they have an advantage.....

Thanks Eagle.

@Andy - you are absolutely correct. I can't believe I let Sergio hook me into that. I gave up on baseball around 1994.
Same here. You wanna hear a sad story?

That year of the lockout my dad got me tickets to see an Orioles game for my Birthday. The seats were right behind the O's dugouts, and I was very excited. I couldn't wait to go to my first O's game. Then a couple of days before the game, the bastards go on strike. So there goes one B-day gift. On top of that, we didn't get a single penny back for the tickets, and did not get tickets for a game when the season continued.

Baseball is the most lazy "sport" around, and it figures it would be our national pastime. It portrays the laziness of American society. Not to mention the lack of passion in the "sport", Baseball is hardly a team sport and quite frankly its a basic waste of time. Fock the "sport" and all that it stands for.

#1) Clemente was a great player, but he was no Willie Mays. Just because Clemente may have been a better humanitarian doesn't make him a better player. He did nothing on the field better than Mays.

#2) Wrong, Wrong, Wrong. Last time I checked, Steroids does not improve hand-eye coordination and strike zone judgement. Take a look at some of Barry's at-bats, when pitchers aren't too chicken-shit to actually pitch to the guy once in a while. The man does not swing at a bad pitch. He is the master of the strike zone, as his 208 walks and 38 strikeouts will attest to. He also isn't hitting those check-swing type homers that juice monkeys like Caminiti and Canseco were famous for. You know those type of home runs, the seemingly effortless little flick of the wrists at pitches 6 inches outside the strike zone. 99% of his home runs are from pitches that are in the strike zone.

And Andy, your disdain of the sport is painfully obvious. There's really no need to repeat it time after time whenever somebody brings it up.

So, let me get this straight.

By your accounts, since baseball is the National Pastime of the United States, and has been for the past 100 years, then that means that we, as Americans, have been lazy for the entire 20th century then.

Wow.

And let's take this one step further.

Since Baseball is the national pastime of Japan,Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, taiwan, and is extremely, extremely popular in Korea and Australia as well, then that must mean that they are lazy as well.

So, it also must mean that countries such as Italy, Greece, Netherlands, becuase they fielded olympic teams, although not quite as lazy, could be well on their way if they continue to do so.

And as far as "passion" is concerned. I take it that you are unfamiliar with the Red Sox-Yankee, Dodgers-Giants, Cubs-Cardinals rivalries, or is it because their fans don't throw lighters at the umpires, or start riots or try to kill each other in the stands.

Yes, today's Juve-Atalanta battle of the heavyweights is certain to spark much passion from the players and fans today.

you painted an awfully broad picture with that paintbrush of yours, Andrew Van Gogh.

Clemente had the best arm the game ever saw. He was better defensively than Willie Mays, and hit for average better. Mays can only beat Clemente with his extremely impressive power numbers.

Sorry Sergio, I might have blown things out of proportion, but still. I don't find any pleasure in the "sport" of basebell, let alone talking about. Its something that should just be forgotten.

Now, I know some of you here don't like baseball.

Well, Too Bad. I'm posting this anyway.

congratulations to my man Barry Bonds for hiting his 700th career home run last night. Only the 3rd player in major league history to do this. Truly, the greatest player of our generation, and in my opinion, the greatest baseball player of all time.
I hate baseball, I detest baseball, but I have to admit that's impressive.
