I really disagree..despite the result it was clear that these youngsters were MUCH more hungry to win than their PROFESSIONAL counter-parts who blamed their socks and shoes for losses and resorted to classy gestures like spitting. Also considering they are the EUROPEAN champions (under Gentile) I it was a MAJOR disappointment.
Considering that once upon a time all the talk of the Olympics was the U.S. Basketball DREAM TEAM (Barcellona 92) and in the Winter Olympics by far the most exciting tournament was the Men's Hockey I think both professionals and so-called amateurs (the Italian under 23 team) add a bit of excitement that ping pong and air pistol do not despite one's patriotism. The olympic games were about the 100 meters...the swimming competitions and the other track events that still garner up big names. These Johnny come lately events which are an attempt to not leave anyone feeling "unwanted" is not what the games is about. Silly me I thought it was about being the world's best in sports and not in leisure activities.
Although the presence of certain disciplines at the Olympics can be somewhat questionable (I seem to remember that there was an Olympic bridge tournament at some point), I think most of them remain proper sports and totally deserve to be represented. The fact that mountain-bike or air pistol were acknowledged as such much later than athletics or swimming does not make them phoney sports either. It just means that there are enough national federations in the world investing in these sports and producing talents (as an ex competitive swimmer, I am really quite surprised at seeing nations with little or no tradition in swimming suddenly grab handfuls of medals btw, or wonderkids beating world records at 18 and retiring at 22 - Domenico Fioravanti anyone? - but that's another story).
Regarding Italy's under 21 team, winning a bronze will in fact be an achievement if compared with past editions where they also came in as reigning European Champions but had to make a discreet exit (Barcelona '92, Atlanta '96, Sydney '00, though Im not sure whether they actually grabbed the third place in the latter?). Also, Gilardino, Pirlo et al ALREADY are professionals, and although they might be in Athens for the noble cause of making their country proud, it's not as if a gold medal will affect their life or career or bank account that much. Anyway, it may be a matter of taste, but personally I've always better enjoyed watching Montano and Vezzali engage in an epic fencing duel with the frogs or our water-polo and volley-ball teams fight classics against Hungary and Holland than Gentile' boys overcoming Mali in the QF..
