It still isn't over. But unfortunately this is the sort of thing where Capello shines: more excuses to maintain the status quo. But fortunately, the Scudetto does still mean a lot -- even after 28 of them. As you well know, there are great seasons that ultimately end up with no silverware.
It does mean a lot but here is why this season it is more than ever being treated as a consolation prize (at best):
1. Pre-Season Juve from Moggi to Capello to Del Piero to Nedved kept repeating the same phrase "WE WANT THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE" "THIS IS OUR ULTIMATE GOAL, ETC."
2. The Parma match re-opened the floodgates: Del Piero offside..Cannavaro manhandles Corradi: no call. Journalists and conspiracy theorists began again: "Every year the same story in Italy" and Capello's defense was in not so many words: We only lost one game in Europe..we ARE the real deal. In fact they were HORRIBLE in Europe...They got Werder and passed in extra time not because of a well set piece or some fine passing for a late goal but because of a keeper's error if you can even call it that...
This added fuel to the fire "ONLY IN ITALY..WONDER WHY"
Europe was Juve's way to justify their status...
3. The fans last night. They simply pissed on the Scudetto and all the achievements of the season: they booed Ibra..they jeered the time and friends told me the infamous "GO TO WORK" (ANDATE A LAVORARE) chant erupted: Interisti sang this to their team when they returned from Spain .. there is no reason why a team that LOST ONE game should receive this type of reception..they needed the fans last night..the fans failed them..but then again they failed the fans at Highbury so this was probably payback.
4. MOGGI has imposed a policy of silence to the Press once again. Juve usually do this when trouble is brewing ... they lost ONE game all season...won the Scudetto months ago practically yet the season is ending on sour note after sour note...
Sad....
