Bottom line: I know Armstrong is on pace for another title but is Ullrich or even Basso going to have any say in it?? (could they cause real trouble)
Its hard to call at this minute... We'll have a clearer view this afternoon.
Armstrong isnt looking great so far... But more importantly his allways present ever strong discovery team faultered badly on saturday... Every single one of them being blown out the back by telekom's 3 pronged attack at the very first question...
To leave lance isolated at the very first test is worrying for discovery... For them all to have a bad day togeather is somewhat abnormal...
They got a rest on sunday with a cease in hostilities as there was too long after the final climb for it to be worth the effort to attack and csc also did them a massive favour by taking the yellow jersey off lances shoulders (fools)
People fail to recognise the massive roll lances team has... He is nothing without his team... A rider that need things to play out in his own way... On the few occassions he has been left isolated lance has panniked and suffered.... (cracked by jan and virenque into morzine, cracked on the galibier by jan and vino etc... On all occasions rescued by his team once regrouped or the right amount of money passed over for another team to help him(csc last year))...
Lance is unbeatable if you let his team control the stage and then lance hits the hammer blow on the final climb... Take his team away and hes not that big a threat....
He is a biggest example of the super team in history... Look back to the last super team in gerwiss... When berzin was the best rider that year with the ultimate team... there was no way anyone else could win... Of course until the idiot evgeni made a comment about not needing his team and as such his team mates let him suffer and he came no where.... If his team arent ticking... lance is in big trouble over the next ten days
Jan... Everyone knows Jan is the most talented and naturally gifted rider in the peloton... But throughout his career he has been blighted by problems in the off seson and hampered by his lifestyle and illness...
This year it looked good for jan... he came into the tour off a good run in the tds and was lighter and fitter at the start since he was in 97 (when he won)...
However as he was in 2003 (when he should have won) this year allthough clearly in good shape and form he has been hit by bad luck...
On the friday before the start he had a nasty incident with his team car whilst recon'ing the opening tt stage... A van pulled out in front of the t car whilst jan was pacing and he went straight through the back window at high speed.... Thus the following day he was clearly showing the signs of a damaged body and had an absolute nightmare on a stage that was nearly perfect for him...
He quietly went about his business over the next days... looking very strong in the team time trial and looked impressive on the final climb on saturday when we saw the first view of of the t-mobile trident in action...
So looking back in shape at that point things were looking up... until he crashed heavily on the first descent on sunday... outwardly it didnt look bad a few cuts and bruises... but later it was shown he had bad bruising to the right side of his chest which is causing him problems... Allthough x-rays showed no breakages they did show him to be badly bruised... so as such we have no idea what hes gonna be able to do now... Maybe luck will rob him this year as his sins have done in the past.
I hope Jan will do well this year... He and especially his immense talent deserves it...
You also have to look to telekoms other riders... in vino and kloeden they have 2 riders that have made the podium themselves.. and all 3 of which will sacrifice themselves for the others once the positon is clear... though this could also be there downfall at this point with all three seamingly in good shape... None of them will want to yield to eachother let alone lance.
Basso... Ivan is massively talented.. But hes also a pvssy that would rather ride for second than risk it all for victory... as shown last year where a tactical choice from csc decided bassos fate as being a best of second (which then dropped to third) rather than actually trying to win... Its a mentality i do not understand... The likes of lance and jan are only here for victory yet this young talent and his team (prob the strongest team in the tour) havent got the balls for it...
Unfortunately it looks that csc are thinking of second again with their tactics on sunday... Yes its nice to get the yellow jersey for a few days but any team looking for victory, especially on the back of a shaky day by discovery on sunday would not make it easier for lance by ridding him of the jersey at this time... It jus isnt the right thing todo at this time...
Ther are others that are well placed and talking a good race so far... but we will see they have anything to back up their claims...
We will get a major shaping of the field today that will answer a lot of questions....
Theres no hiding on the roads to Courchevel !!
