I have no explanations or even judgments concerning this.

All I want to say is that this can't possibly be what life is about.
It's a feeding frenzy in malls. It's the most disturbing thing to experience when you are WORKING in one of those stores. When I had to do it you would get screamed at by customers. Something about black friday brings out the worst in people. Rude, insensitive and downright disgusting behavior from people.

here in Italy this Black Friday is just a scam.
Usually retailers or e-shop increase the price like 2 weeks before and then apply some kind of discount resulting that at best you pay the usual price.

The only thing worthy is the amazon warehouse deals but then again it's not new stuff but repaired and sold as "new".

I was waiting for a Dell S2716DG to drop down a bit from the 564euro.... well thx to Black Friday now the price is 670+ euro (meaning over 700$)

Guess I'll wait for Christmas

After New Years. That's when you will find the best deals. Retailers are looking to liquidate inventory before the new "season (spring)" merchandise begins rolling in. You could probably find an open box returned item you want as well.

It sounds like pure horror. I'm not sure I understand how this phenomenon came to be either. The USA are about consumerism, that is true. And maybe it also has to do with people having less purchasing power than they did a few decades ago or the fact that prices for stuff like tv's and gaming consoles has gone up, sometimes dramatically. But how did it ever get to this? And why only in the USA? Of course we have similar days/weeks in Belgium when stores will offer goods at a discount, but it's not that kind of mass hysteria at all.

It's something that came over time. For some, its fun to go out at midnight for the mayhem as a family (lunacy if you ask me)...but as the shopping mall boom of the 70s/80s took off...retailers would sink their prices to drive traffic to the stores. Then the crazier it got, the more people became fascinated by it. It's true you can find amazing deals, but as Sergio pointed out, you can do all of it online and skip the mayhem.

Amazon is taking over, eventually IMO this stupid day will decrease as more people would rather buy online.

I will never bring my children to a mall shopping on a Black Friday. One, its not safe with people pushing and literally trying to grab toys out of your own cart...fights break out, too many people that your kids can get lost. It's fucking annoying. LoL that's all I can really say about it.

Yeah, I can see that.

The lack of self respect involved in going to the mall and fighting over an item is what is most shocking to me though. I can't imagine fighting someone over for example a tv because I can buy it at half price.

Funny because I have worked retail and have done my fair share of black friday shopping but have never experienced or seen anything like this. Is this an east coast thing or just an inner city thing?

inner city for sure...DC metro area sucks...anything that is metro accessible. Cleveland was bad too, but not like here. Newark, NJ sucked donkey balls but nothing takes the cake of Northern VA/DC.
