I'm with Andy on this one. It's not like they're walking down Times Square. If I were in that neighborhood, I'd like to have a gun or assault rifle on me too.
You named it: assault rifle...a rifle for assaults. Not quickreactiontoprotectyourself rifle.

There is not one defensive situation, where an eye catching huge ass semi-automatic rifle is to prefer over a handgun. You won't pull it in time, you will mark yourself as a target, you will scare the crap out of innocent ppl.
A machine pistol would be less dumb.

This. It doesn't make sense to carry an assault rifle. If there was a robbery per say, the attackers would easily target the obvious threats first and take them out (the guys carrying huge ass rifles).

An assault rifle doesn't have to be big or hard to operate. And just the sight of one would make some thug crackhead not wanna fuck with you.

I am not quite sure how the law works over there, but let's say I am at a gas station with my AR and someone decides to rob the cashier, does it give me the right to act like a hero and stop / kill him?

Depends on the local laws. But in most cases yes, you would be in your legal right to stop the crime. However, if there are local ordinances against carrying assault rifles in public you could possibly face charges on that front. Also, causing any bodily harm to an assailant without being trained can lead to a wrongful death/harm suit.

That's fucked up in my opinion.

I'd understand that if he starts shooting at people, but killing him just because he is trying to get some cash?

Anyway, carrying a gun let alone an AR in public is beyond me.

Nobody brought up that these are essentially their own vigilantes and that everyone is pretty much at the mercy of whether or not they have a 0.10 blood alcohol when you cross them on the street at night?

How many kills does the vigilante get?

I have ever heard of a single shooting from one of these folks, so that comment has no bearing and isn't really factual.
