there are many more things that should be cut before nasa's tiny budget is cut.
Pork-Barrel Projects, and the like.
This isn't necessarily true.
It's like saying we need to spend a lot of money on finding shoes which will allow us to fly when the shoes we have now cause 500 tons of Greenhouse Gasses each year.
In terms of money, R&D, which NASA is really ONLY about shows less cost:benefit than things which work, are needed, and are proven.

True dat. Competition is what got the US into space in the first place. More following than leading, really.
Same is true with aerospace engineering, as in planes, trains, and automobiles. Also, it wasn't until Einstein said, "HEY FUCKERS, I'm from Germany, and Germany has this idea of an 'Atom Bomb,' this is something we should explore."
It wasn't until that letter that the University of Chicago's squash court, and J-Bobby came into play.
I would agree, following rather than leading, but fear of being second or missing something is more cause than anything.
