I heard somebody say that as soon as Del Piero returned, Di Vaio was dropped, but that isn't true. Ale came back and was struggling for form, so Lippi dropped him for Miccoli and Fabrizio started with Di Vaio during Trezeguet's brief absence.
During his spell on the bench, DP scored two goals in two matches (Olympiakos, Parma) and then added a third consecutive goal to his tally in the Coppa Italia against Siena. Alex eventually forced his way back into the team and has done well enough to keep his place with pretty good performances against Perugia and Sampdoria, followed by a hat-trick, albeit thanks to two penalties, against Siena.
Surely Di Vaio understands why he isn't starting, and I understand his frustration because it's only natural to want to play as often as possible, especially with a major international tournament coming up, but atm he's second best.
PS. Why not play DV instead of Trez rather than in DP's place?
