I heard somebody say that as soon as Del Piero returned, Di Vaio was dropped, but that isn't true. Ale came back and was struggling for form, so Lippi dropped him for Miccoli and Fabrizio started with Di Vaio during Trezeguet's brief absence.

During his spell on the bench, DP scored two goals in two matches (Olympiakos, Parma) and then added a third consecutive goal to his tally in the Coppa Italia against Siena. Alex eventually forced his way back into the team and has done well enough to keep his place with pretty good performances against Perugia and Sampdoria, followed by a hat-trick, albeit thanks to two penalties, against Siena.

Surely Di Vaio understands why he isn't starting, and I understand his frustration because it's only natural to want to play as often as possible, especially with a major international tournament coming up, but atm he's second best.

PS. Why not play DV instead of Trez rather than in DP's place?

Well, Di Vaio had that spell of superb form at the start of the season - he was a livewire. That form seems to have faded slightly and that may be down to lack of play, but Miccoli's form seems to be ongoing..it's him who deserves that first team place one way or another..Trezeguet's just a waste of space, I gave up on him a few seasons back. :(

Play 4-2-3-1 with Giuly, Zidane and Pires behind Henry :p

@Musco: If only one of Del Piero and Miccoli were a bit taller and stronger they could coexist but...

i'd rather play Zidane and Pires behind Henry and Cisse in the absence of Trez.

I like that idea, but it doesn't really work with the tactical system that been in place since the beginning of the season. Our attack is focused more on the flanks and getting high balls into the box for Trezeguet, and Di Vaio wouldn't be as good with them. Furthermore, it's never really been tested whether or not he and Del Piero could play together well. Seems to me that they would, but maybe they would play each other's position too much.

stu, maybe not this season but I felt it was that way last season- that DV was dropped after DP returned. Maybe my memory failed me.

and no, no trading with trez please. everyone should know I want trez to get the top place. besides he's scoring. it would be different if he hasn't.

Yeah but DP was actually pretty good following his injury last season. Sure, he was inconsistent, but still pretty good.
