I know, I know, it takes getting used to, a lot of it. But it's only because your mind stuck at the windows filestructure, without wanting to give that up. The unix variant is superior in some ways, as it's designed for stability, security and network use. For instance, backing up your entire file structure is a piece of cake. Try that on windows.. :eyepatch: I've been using linux for a while and I'm starting to appreciate the way it's done, slowly.
But here's a fast and easy intro:
/bin Binary files (executables)
/etc System-wide configuration files
/dev Device files
/home User home directories
/lib Library files
/sbin Superuser binary files
/tmp Temporary files (short term)
/usr Files for users (software, docs, libs)
/var Runtime data (logs, temp files, mail spool, printer spool etc)
