Marty, great news for you :extatic:

I've had a minor virus problem in the past couple of days, and I thought that's about my cue to go through my regular reformat (to clean up all the junk my box accumulates). This time though, I'm thinking of giving Linux a shot. I'll let you know how it goes ;)

P.S. You know you're a true geek when you feel nervous and excited about changing operating systems :geek:

hehe good man ;) I suggest the new Fedora Core 2, less easy-for-newbies but still good enough to handle with long windoze experience, excellent hardware detection and looks very slick which I know is something you appreciate.

Oh really? I've already started downloading Mandrake cos I heard it's user-friendly, I'm only about 150MB into the d/ls, it worth cancelling and going for Fedora Core?

I would go with Fedora Core, I never liked Mandrake that much myself (even though I heard a lot of success stories about newbies and never-before-used-a-computer people having much luck with it but then you are beyond that category). Also, Fedora seems to be the distro under most heavy development at the moment, v2 is a big improvement from v1 and it looks like it's going forward the fastest of them.

Dammit Martin, why weren't you here when I made the big decision? :irritate:

    You've got me sold ;)

btw for your own sake (so as to avoid having to provide 24/7 technical support for me), would you recommend any good FAQ sites and the like?

Is it Fedora Core 2 test 2 I'm looking for here?

Well a test release means it's not yet hit gold and may be unstable. You should be fine though. Dunno any support recources for anything but gentoo, which is one reason I adore gentoo. ;)

gentoo linux boot : boot partition for gentoo (holds the stuff necessary to boot gentoo, nothing more)
gentoo linux root (/) : root partition, ie. the whole filesystem
gentoo linux root (/root) : separate partition for user "root" (superuser) plugged into the filesystem at /root (ie. mount point)
gentoo linux swap: swap partition, virtual memory, pagesys it's called in win. assign a separate partition for swap is how we do in linux
lindows root: test partition for another distribution

    Then we're off baby :extatic:

I'll probably be a fair while though, I've got a Director assignment due and a shiteload of stuff to back up. This is when I need a DVD+- :sigh:

I can just imagine afterwards though, it'll be like when I first got Moz. Every few seconds I'll be like "HEY I FOUND SOMETHING NEW!!"

    :D I can't wait

    Man, I could use a site for people who are "old to Linux". After configuring, rolling, and installing a Red Hat v2 kernel on a 166Mhz PC for Web serving back in 1996, I haven't been keeping up -- particularly now that work has admins everywhere doing all the setups for us. %^}

Dunno, the kernel-dev mailing list? :D

Apparently Linus thinks the scsi emulation in 2.6.x is in "bad taste", you could confront him on that.. :D

    EDIT: removed

After a more thorough look at the site I realized it was a tad more pornographic than I thought. :D
