That's different, though, because when something like that happens, the linesman has his flag up, or the ball didn't cross the line, or whatever... so everyone knows the reason the goal wasn't given.

The thing with the video replay, though, is that some little thing that only the 4th official noticed might be the reason for a goal not being awarded, and reviewing this evidence might take a fair amount of time. In Rugby, the video referee takes a good 30 seconds to analyse the replay and give a verdict. Normally, the linesman has his flag up within about 1 second....big difference......

okay, lets say we do have a 4th official with a replay. the players would surround the referee to protest. then the referee asks the 4th official to show a replay. then he watches the replay. then the players, i believe, would then surround the 4th official and protest more.

The 4th man would have already seen the replay before the players even come close to the ref

Seriously, when we're watching the games at home, it usually takes us just one replay to notice if a goal was in or not.

people what ian's saying is that referees are the judges of games and they shouldnt have to bow down to replays.

with replays whats the point of having a referee on the field? and linesman? why not just have a jury who all vote on the replay they just saw on a widescreen?

lets not complicate the game any more. the beauty of football is in its simplicity

Agreed. The reason they have a referee is that he's trusted to use his judgment to make a good decision on the spot. Sure, he's not perfect, and that's why they have 4 officials. I don't think the video ref thing is practical, though it does have it pro's

i think replays have a good use as in they cant be bribed, or subjective, or distorted, have fuzzy vision, etc

even with replays though, the final decision lies with the ref. Somtimes, the ref overrules the linesman, even if he didn't see the incident. That's just stupid...
