The "HOT" name in Juve territory right now is Zapata. He would cost between 12-14m € depending if we loan them some youngsters.

    Ivanovic could join us also.

ivanovic is the only defender we could realistically get in january due to the russian league calender anyone else is comming in the summer unless we offer alot more to persuade them to sell now which to me sounds ridiculous.

that would look good in about 5 years but do u think its worth having a weak inexperienced backline that could get potentially dominated for 2 years n well maybe then be somehting special
My thoughts exactly. Potentially elite in 3-5 years... but currently VERY exploitable. Especially because Ivanovic has never seen tough Serie A competition, and Criscito has proven incapable of it so far.

I say one of Zapata or Ivanovic (preference on Zapata) and a mid-aged (24-29) LB.

the problem with a mid aged LB is that he will surely be a short term player who is not really that good let alone world class.. do we go with a younger player who can become world class or a middle aged ok player?? its pretty hard to answer but ultimately if we go with the younger option we are sacrificing the short term

Its a very tough question. Ideally, you go for the younger middle aged player who has the potential for greatness still. Someone 24-27 years old. That way, you're still gonna get at least 3-5 top years out of them. Guys like Pasqual and Zaccardo come to mind. Not that old, decent, but there's a feeling there's another gear they can shift into. Problem with the young potential star, is that they pull a Legrottaglie and take 5 years to become useful (let alone a star) or worse, never become anything useful at all.

I think if the Juventus braintrust have faith in Criscito, Molinaro and De Ceglie long term, the need for youth is slightly overstated. If there isn't faith in them, then there is a need for investment.

Like I said, I'd invest in one young defender only. Right now that would be Zapata. The long-term needs have to be balanced with short-term need... and that's a instantly dependable leftback.

I agree with every thing u said, except the bolded bit.. a real problem is that there is actually no players available in Italy that who are above average currently but with the potential to become a real star (im talking defense).. I highly doubt Zaccardo can become truly class and i cant comment on Pasqual because i dont have enough knowledge of him to make such a judgement but italy certainly do have a gap between the older defenders such as Canna, Nesta, Matrix and the young players such as Chiellini. For mine Barzagli, Gamberini & Bonera just dont cut it

Zapata fits the bill and while Chiellini continues to impress as a centre back, we may have our central pairing for the next 5 plus years. Ivanovic would also be nice but conisdering we still Andrade, who will return in the second half of the season, probably mid way, we'll have that experienced defender back.

As for LB, Molinaro needs to step up another notch, OR, Criscito needs to start playing there week in week out. De Ceglie looks good at left back for the Azzurrini...i dont see why he couldnt take on that role in the near future.

We still have Legro, Boumsong, Birindelli and Zebina for experience, all which could be sold over the Jan and Summer breaks...Grygera has experience also.

    Chiellini
    Andrade
    Grygera
    Zapata
    Ivanovic
    Molinaro (De Ceglie)
    Criscito

    Young but definitely talented enough.

That defense may hold well in Serie A(though unlikely) but it will get raped in the CL. None of those defenders with the exception of Andrade (Grygera?) i think have CL experience/are proven the CL. biri is too old, Zebina is meh and Legro is questionable.
