I hope he picks juve... it would make more sense for him at 23 to be a starter in a big team as opposed to being 4th choice at Chelsea. (Terry, Carvalho, Alex, Ben Haim)

Plus Juventus will be in the CL most likely next season and while we may not be able to match Chelsea's salary we are far more historic and prestigious

i voted for ivanovic, but i'm afraid that chelsea will get him. it might not necessarily be his choice, if we get into a biding war with chelsea who you think will win? he may want to come juve, but if lokomotiv don't want to sell him to us then...

Juve Set For €20m Defensive Spending Spree

Juventus director-general Jean Claude Blanc has set aside €20m for the club to spend on defenders.

The Bianconeri are in desperate need of some defensive reinforcements and were already light at the back before Jorge Andrade was ruled out for most of the season with a broken kneecap.

According to Tuttosport, Juventus are doing very well financially and have recovered from the economic loss of being demoted to Serie B after the Calciopoli crisis.

The main players linked today with a move to Turin are Udinese star Cristian Zapata, Fenerbahce’s Diego Lugano, Stuttgart stopper Fernando Meira, and Lokomotiv Moscow youngster Branislav Ivanovic.

Ivanovic is believed to be Coach Claudio Ranieri’s first choice, although Inter and Chelsea have also recently entered the race to sign the 23-year-old.

Another player who seems to be on his way to the Old Lady is Aston Villa centre-half Olof Mellberg. The Swedish international’s contract with the Villans runs out at the end of season, and would be available on a Bosman free transfer.

Mellberg is 30-years-old and has been at Villa Park since 2001, making over 200 appearances. He has also represented his country on 77 occasions, playing in both the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.

I hate stories like that. There is no direct source of the money, but people will read that and assume Juve have to spend all 20 million euro and/or other teams will see that and realize they can squeeze the team for more.

Though not a bad list of options. Little disappointed that Barzagli isn't a possibility, I really think he can reach the next level with Juve.

So, who needs a strong/solid experienced CB?
Someone who can lead the defense with authority, avoid mistakes, being a reliable solution against every foe and teach our young defenders by example???

Many clubs would have preferred such a player, esp if they had a Center Defender crisis,
but no sir!!! Not Juve, we dont need any reliable solutions now, we need someone for the future...
Who really needs results now? when we can have a hope for the future?

...

Besides hopes are cheaper, than proven material...

I agree... Juventus doesn't exactly have Cannavaro and Thuram to fall back on if an experimental young player doesn't pan out. Chelsea for example can easily experiment on Ivanovic, since if he fails to adapt, they still have lots of excellent defenders to choose from. Juventus on the other hand, lacks that luxury. They need a proven commodity desperately. People can bitch about Barzagli all they want... he's a top defender in one of the three most difficult leagues on earth with a lot of room to improve. Juventus needs to grab players entering their prime (aged 25-28). Meira is probably the best out of the ones shortlisted in that likely to be bogus article. Even Zapata is not the best option, seeing as Udinese is not exactly a defensive powerhouse. More and more, losing out on Milito is proving to be devastating.

Ranieri Rejected Barzagli

Juventus Coach Claudio Ranieri rejected the chance to sign Palermo defender Andrea Barzagli, reports Tuttosport today.

Barzagli has long been linked with the Bianconeri and he was expected to move to Turin for the start of the 2006/07 season.

However the Calciopoli crisis last summer scuppered any chances of a deal and the ex-Chievo defender remained in Sicily. According to the Italian newspaper Tuttosport, Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini recently offered his star defender to Ranieri but he was turned down.

Juventus are in desperate need of reinforcements in the centre of defence after Jorge Andrade broke his kneecap and will be ruled out for most of the season.

They have been linked with a host of stoppers, including Branislav Ivanovic, Diego Lugano, Luisao, and even Luigi Di Biagio.

The decision of Ranieri to snub Barzagli is puzzling, seeing as he has developed into one of the peninsula’s best defenders over the past 18 months.

The World Cup winner is widely regarded as the long-term centre back of the Azzurri, once the ageing Fabio Cannavaro and Marco Materazzi hang up their boots.

The 26-year-old has filled in superbly for the injured Materazzi recently and put in polished performances in the Euro 2008 qualifiers against France, Ukraine and Georgia.
