Must-Have Programs for all you cheapskates out there (2 Viewers)

Hey everyone.. I would like to share with everyone here the wonderful program that is the GIMP..
GIMP or, GNU Image Manipulation Program (something like that), is a freeware, open-source program for editing photos, graphics etc.. Just like Photoshop or Paintshop Pro.. It saved me from quite a bind..

Yeah, but it's deep in the slowness. Besides, it didn't mention the GIMP.

By the way, isn't the GIMP having a little trouble with patents (the very same problem that killed Martin's favourite media player)?

GIMP? We use it all the time in the command-line batch processing where I work.

Funny that I recall downloading and using some of the first versions back when I first stumbled on it around 1997 or so. You never know which of these open source tools will have legs and which will die out sometimes.

pardon? mplayer isn't dead, it's just heavily protesting the notion of software patents (directive was hosed in the EU thankfully). As far as I know they have no problem supporting the same formats they always did.

flash is very windows-centric because it's macromedia technology. there are efforts toward open source flash but I don't imagine they've gotten too far yet.

Oh. :redface: The first (and last) time I visited their site, it had a nice "So Long and Thank's For All the Fish" message, and a brief paragraph explaining that it was the patents what dunnit.

Yeah they've been up in arms about it but there was always a link from the splash page to the actual site, where everything went ahead as normal.

With a truly overwhelming majority the EU parliament has rejected the proposed software patent directive last week. This is a great victory for the movement against software patents and a relief for free software and all of the software industry in Europe and worldwide. It is also a great personal satisfaction for myself and other members of the MPlayer team that have been actively lobbying against software patents. Nevertheless all that glistens is not gold and while we have won an important battle, this struggle is far from over. There are still thousands of software patents that have already been granted in Europe. Furthermore efforts to extend patentability towards software will now continue on the national level and probably return at the EU level in a few years. Thus we have to continue our fight to fend off software patents completely and worldwide. For this we need the help of all community members. You have to keep a watchful eye on your political representatives, inform them about the issues at stake and make sure they pass sensible legislation.

In KDE, you can have your wallpaper rotate every X minutes among a collection of your choice. I have that going. I don't know of anything like what you're looking for though. It sounds reasonable, so someone's probably got it implimented.

Yeah, I believe there is. Are you using gnome? I've seen the option in kde myself..
