Not only that, I read the paper too. You can read it here:
https://www.hudsonbaycapital.com/do...o_Restructuring_the_Global_Trading_System.pdf

The paper says it’s Bessent’s idea to put countries into tariff tiers based on some factors (trade deficit is not one), and recommends a gradual implementation system. Let’s assume that’s a good idea. What’s the wisdom of singling out your biggest trading partners first before fucking everyone else?
Take Canada for example. If Trump announced a broad 10% tariff on everyone and higher on China Canada might’ve been able to stomach it easier. Now not only they retaliated, but it created a political storm too. Also why antagonize European NATO members while you’re taking on China?
The rolled out tariffs doesn’t seem to follow the pattern that the paper is proposing. It seems to me that Trump took the basic idea and forged his reckless stupidity into it. But I’m sure “nobody knows about this stuff better than him”.
That's one way to look at it, or like i said the closest ones and the ones most likely to fold to initiate the domino effect. The answer to the why and whether this was insanity or a stroke of genius will only be revealed down the road, so at this point we are just speculating.

We are a spineless shell of a nation under Trump. Weakest government since the Civil War easily.

Judge rules Columbia activist Mahmoud Khalil can be deported

https://abcnews.go.com/US/judge-dec...mahmoud-khalil-deported-us/story?id=120726623
He will be given asylum in a decent country and will get a great job. He'll take his wife and kid and they'll have a great life together. When you make this type of move, the whole system will lose credibility. Successfully deporting an American for no crime, think about that for a minute. America is now like Taliban ruled Afghanistan.

It goes without saying that the results will be ultimate metric for success or failure, but I thought we’re talking about tweeter’s argument that this was according to a plan. But the plan did not match the execution, as the writer pontificates in his smug tone (“ I'm always amused when people are shocked by people doing exactly what they said they’d do”)

I'm not sure if this is the "folding" they intended: getting the closest big economies to prioritize more direct deals with China.

At least that doesn't sound like isolation to me.

I'm still just scratching my head at all the former Tea Party voters who now support taxation without representation.

i'd exclude brilliance here @GordoDeCentral

he's either lying while he shouldn't, especially if his scheme was so brilliant, or he doesn't understand how tariffs work

He must now how tariffs work. With so many economic advisers around him, even if he had 0 knowledge before which I dont believe, he would learn by now. It is a straight out lie to American people that will have a crash course on tariffs as many of them seem ignorant of basic economic principles. If he keeps tanking their economy, he will get impeached. You cannot make powerful people lose trillions with impunity.

so first it was general tariffs across the board, no pauses, no exceptions. now tariffs for most countries are paused and there are exceptions

a proper clown show. and in the meantime chinese media - including murican journalists working for chinese outlets - are literally making fun of trump

art of the deal, unwritten chapter. watch and learn

Well if you want a large manufacturing base at low wages, they're going to have to be uneducated so that checks out.

Didn't pretty much every nation face declines in math and reading scores after COVID though?

They also invest in infrastructure, meanwhile we only need to look at how Republicans handled that during the Biden administration.
