If you want to boost manufacturing and bring back jobs targeted tariffs are the way to do it. Across the board tariffs, like what this moron implemented, won't work because one country cannot simply have the whole supply chain within its borders. Also, it's not even clear whether he wants to use them as a negotiating tactic, or simply balanced the trade by increasing the cost of exporting to the US for other countries.
Given midterm elections are in 19 months, and real chance of deep recession, there's not any room for doing shit like this. This society cannot take a shock like this.

Ofc not. For decades you have used a cheap labor from Asian countries and both your companies and consumers had benefits. The problem here I think is intelectual property, since local companies in the countries you used to outsource jobs, coppied tech, developed their own and started to produce quality and competitive products. So suddenly you dont have an upper hand any longer.

i'd add one thing. history shows us that tariff wars ended for a reason: they aren't effective at all. you can target specific products with tariffs to protect your domestic products, and it makes sense in some cases.

but general tariffs across all products will simply drive inflation for no reason. wanna drink some coffee? you can't grow it locally, you have to import it. you want to import lithium? talk to one of these countries "to make a deal" or hit them with tariffs to shoot yourself in the foot:

anyway... there's not a single angle from where general tariffs for all trading partners, ranging from 10 to 99% is a remotely good idea
