I will have to educate myself what a swing state means or why Iowa is considered a key race with only 6 votes. :D
The Presidential elections are decided by electoral votes and who wins more states (not votes necessarily). Most states in the US are either sure Dem or Rep wins. Those who are not are called swing states, and are the ones that really decide the election.

Swing states are what they sound like pretty much. NY and Cali for example always vote Democratic. Alabama always votes Republican. The candidates can always count on those states to vote for them. The swing states can go either way and end up being the deciding factor in elections.
