populists and extremists are on the rise basically everywhere, be it germany, france or eastern european countries, but the amount of following they have in the us is especially shocking (for me at least)
A number of factors at play. War is back in fashion, but a lot of nations are far too insulated from real war for generations. So tolerance of militarization is quite high now.
Peace time dividends have lead to a sense of governing inertia with technology faster than legislation can keep up with, unpunished mega con artists thriving everywhere by exploiting that gap, and people feeling like suckers for paying for it all.
And actual democracy is messy and slow, not disruptive and launching like a rocket. People have generationally forgotten the horrors of autocratic rule and only see the promises of affiliating themselves with unrestricted power, unhindered by any other interest groups or fellow citizens.
So we're well above that baseline 20% now. People are going to need to burn their hands on the stove before they remember why that isn't a great idea... willingly turning themselves into Xi's autocratic China while cursing China in the same breath.
