great-thanks alot! I will stick with the complete package. lol there was an article that was partly about mozilla in one section of the Wall Street Journal today. it was about how it is expanding it's market share, mainly because worries about IEs security problems
who in their right mind would buy shares in a an organisation that professes to be non-profit and open source? :D

market share != stock options, my boy :)

Simply means that more and more people use it, doesn't say anything about profits. ;)

Yeah, market share means the portion of people using your product as opposed to any other product which does the same general thing. So more and more people are using Mozilla instead of Internet Explorer, Opera, etc. to browse the internet.

Question for computer science experts. :)

I need to know about losses that companies have due to problems in internet security due to usage of unsecure browsers, such as Internet Explorer.

Does anybody have any idea where I can get this info?

Googling doesn't seem to help that much.

Are you talking about specific case studies?
    Yes.

I am doing research for one of my classes. And I (together with my team) have chosen a topic of switching to a better browser on a corporate level.

My part deals with losses that companies/industries have.

Well I'm sorry I don't have any specific material to point to but I imagine there have been lots of case studies dealing with data loss or break-in due to IE/Outlook vulnerabilities. Unfortuantely, when these stories surface you usually get just the headlines with a short description of what the vulnerability was, often describing what kind of loss it was to the company but rarely in precise monetary terms.

Tried googling for it just now, couldn't find anything relevant. :(

But here's an idea, you familiar with usenet? Cause that's really the best way to look for this kind of thing, when you know exactly what you want.

    Thanks for your help.

I am familiar usenet. But I have the same resources at the university library for free.

So I'll go check it out tomorrow.

Having used it over the weekend, I've come to the conclusion that a number of the features it lacks annoy the hell out of me. That said, a lot of people wouldn't even notice them. Anyone got an idea of how it stands up security-wise?

I might give K-Meleon a go if I get some time in the near future; have you read any reviews about the security and all that?

As for the lack of features, what can you expect if you're going for an ultra-lightweight browser...

I imagine that's all contained in the Gecko implementation, the browser is just the windows and menus to support the browser engine.

Guys, you do of course realize that Firefox *is* the lightweight Gecko browser? ;) In Linux the Gnome desktop project has something similar to K-Meleon (odd name no less) called Epiphany, also a shell around the Gecko engine but I find it too stripped down for my liking.

Explain. Is Firefox just a different shell around the same engine? Are they mreged projects?

Well the Gecko engine is the same one, if you look at pages in Firefox and Seamonkey they will look the same cause the rendering is common. What is different is the functionality beyond just the browser engine.
