Security firms and Homeland Security within the U.S is warning everyone of a new large scale attack on the Internet that's currently under way. Security firms say that thousands of web sites have already been infected by a virus. If a user goes to a web site which has been infected,
the user will become infected if running Internet Explorer. The virus takes advantage of an exploit in Internet Explorer an exploit that Microsoft has yet to fix. Once a end-user has been infected with the virus, their computer will be used to send spam to millions of people.
The Internet Storm Center, a site that collects incident reports from computer industry professionals, says malicious code was first detected on websites about five days ago.
NetSec, one of the large security firms, said there are some well known sites already infected but they declined to name the affected Web sites for liability reasons but said they are "big, big sites."
Only web sites running Microsoft's IIS (Internet Information Services) web server can be infected, so Overclockers Club is safe from this one as we don't even run Windows and for that reason
"There's a potential for widespread impact because currently the (antivirus) vendors don't have a signature for it," said Dan Frasnelli of NetSec.
Update: We have gained more information about how the virus infects users' PC's. Web sites that are infected will have JavaScript code appended to the bottom of web pages.
If you are running an IIS 5 server you should verify that there is no unusual JavaScript appended to the bottom of pages delivered by the web server.
Wondering what server software your favorite web sites are running? Surf on over to Netcraft.com and they can automatically tell you.
You should also block 217.107.218.147 IP address at your firewall. This is the IP address that the virus sends information to.
Anti-virus signatures are now being put out and the virus will be named "JS.Scob.Trojan" with most anti-virus porgrams.
