Two movies on the TV last night:

Bandits
Bruce Willis, Billy-Bob Thornton and Cate Blanchet. Pretty ordinary movies about a pair of bank robbers who pick up a bored housewife, their relationships and their eventual demise (or escape, depending on whether or not you want me to spoil the movie. I'm not saying which one's which unless someone cares enough to pm me about it :p).

High Heels and Low Lives
Minnie Driver and some blonde American actress. A nurse and an out of work actress (I suspect she had no trouble adapting to that role :D) accidentally overhear a bank robber's phone conversation, and decide to blackmail him. He tries to kill them, and shows a persistant incompetance that would shame even Wilie E. Coyote. Still worth a watch, if only for near the end where Minnie Driver lets rip at a house with a piece of artillery which looked more suited to being mounted on a tank. Actually, maybe not.

Finally, something in the cinemas:
Aliens vs Preditor
A pretty dodgy sci-fi, which will satisfy only fans with low expectations. The special effects are very good, and not overdone at all, and the overall plot isn't too bad for this kind of think, but the dialogue is woeful, and often left me thinking that the whole think might have worked if only they'd gotten in someone comptetent to rewrite the script. The actors were okay to poor no-namers (baring an appearance from the guy who played Bishop in the earlier Alien films). It says a lot that the charactor you empathise most with is an eight foot tall monster. The final scene is annoying at best. I feel I can ruin it with impunity: the dead Predator, left unattended on the ship, makes some crackling noises, before his chest splits open to reveal the now-familiar little white Alien 'chick'. This rankles for two reasons:
(A) We saw earlier that the Predators can see these things inside a chest, so he wouldn't have been unattended.
(B) A single Alien, even fully-grown, would seem to present little more menace to a ship full of Predators than a bloke with a knife would to the operators of an aircraft carrier.
Anyway, if you read this much, you should probably go watch the film, just to get it out of your system.

thanks for ruining the ending for those who haven't seen it John :)

maybe the predalien would be stronger than the regular ones, since they spawned from a superior race...

you're right about empathising with the characters... I couldn't have cared less about any of the characters, even the English guy whom I last saw running down the street with his tie caught in Bullet Tooth Tony's window.

Gunpowder, Treason and Plot?

I haven't seen it, but I've seen a couple of other documentaries about the Gunpowder Plot... I don't mean to sound disrespectful to the intended victims or anything, but I think it was a pretty clever plan...

Old Boy
Korean film, subtitled. Great movie. A guy gets randoimly abducted, and imprisoned for fifteen years. He doesn't know who did it or why. He's realeased without warning, and tracks down who imprisoned him, who then challenges him to find out the far more important question of why.

The fight scene in the corridore of his prison, in which Oh Dae-Su takes on a dozen or so men armed with lengths of timber, he himself having only a hammer, is the best I've ever seen.

Be warned, the twists at the end, while very unexpected, are quite disturbing - don't watch if you have a delicate moral sence. Otherwise a great film.

Gray, I never know Korean was such a great language for shouting threats in! :) Or maybe the guy who plays Oh Dae-Su is just that good an actor.

I haven't seen this yet but I've heard about it; sounds like an interesting storyline.

As for the language thing, I think you're right; Korean is a pretty good language to shout in :) It's not an angry or aggressive language IMO, but it can be put to good use with a touch of rage ;)

Bad education - I thought it will be better... there was so much talking about that movie over here, that the movie is so controversial, shows such bad things and it was just boring.
