Because I had three and a half hours to spare yesterday, and there are few things I find more tortuous than American collegiate sports on TV, I rewatched The Seven Samurai for the first time in a long time.

Who thought Mifune would have worked so well as the drunken wannabe in this?

I simply don't accept that. Being There is on of the smartest movies I've ever seen.

Its relevance to modern politics some 28 years after its release is still insanely high.

Don't want to sound rude or anything, but you've got a pretty outdated and shitty taste in movies Greg :D
Nah, don't worry about it. I have long been fed up with all the new trash parading itself as "movies" these days at £14-a-screening.

Sure, the new stuff is more timely with the culture. But cultural context is just holding up a mirror. I learn nothing from that.

Basically, I figure that if any given year there may be a handful of books, movies, etc., that will be worth reading/watching that year, that only means that the back catalog has hundreds if not thousands of examples that I would be better off spending my time reading/watching -- instead of lowering my standards to the huge volume of mediocre, forgettable dreck that comes out in a given year.

The Seven Samurai beats the pants off of a minimum of 97% of the movies that came out this last year.

Let me put it another way... five years from now, I won't remember that Speed Racer or Hancock even existed. But I'll remember The Seven Samurai.

I wish. :D

But I knew enough to get some amusement out of the subtitles. Like when they translated "Sensei" to "Sir", I knew they were losing a lot of cultural context.

But my favorite subtitles included "sheeyit!" and (I am literally not making these up) "Fee-roh-shus!".

It was like the subtitlers of the original "Iron Chef" got a hold of Kurosawa.
