Bollocks! :D

When you're reading a Ludlum story, what is it that makes it entertaining? The complexity, that's what. You know the characters fairly well, so you know what you can reasonably expect from them, Ludlum doesn't violate that expectation. In other words, there are certain plausible scenarios you can see ahead of time. Equally, there is the situation involving various parties who have contrasting interests, again you can guess as to what will happen. But in the climactic moments he rises to a level of complexity beyond your horizon, and when you understand how it's all connected, that's a thrill.

I don't know why this isn't obvious. Entertainment = thinking. If something is banal it's not entertaining. So when people say "stop thinking so much and just enjoy it" they're missing the point. The enjoyment is in the thinking. ;)

ahh but now you are talking about something completely different here, i love ludlum have read quite a few of his books and am a huge fan of his works. personally i would have loved the bourne movies to have followed the carlos the jackal duels a lot closer. would have made excellent movies even better!

however,to make a movie up to the standard of a ludlum novel would take about 4 hours sitting to get teh best out of it. i do enjoy movies that make you think but tbh, that is not what an action movie is about. an action move is an adrenalin fix, switch off your brain and enjoy,. sure there are some action movies that require you to actually pay attention but like nicholas cage movies, they are instantly forgettable.

i prefer thrillers myself, films that require you to stop, think and immerse yourself in them, but to expect your average run of the mill actioner to hold up to a quality movie like the usual suspects...well...i guess i just don't expect as much from them

This is an idealization. It's fine to say enjoy the action but when you have a car attacking a helicopter 30m above ground (Die Hard 4) it's a bit hard to ignore the reality of things and ask "what the hell is this?".

I mean an action movie is about action, right? So why don't they just have one 2 hour long gunfight? Because ultimately it's still a movie, you need characters, you need a story, you expect a certain ingenuity for weak characters to defeat stronger ones and so on.

In The Name of The King. Probably a terrible film by all critical means, but very fun to watch and not pay for. How does Uwe Boll keep doing it? He takes a shit story, a shit script, 7 has been actors and creates a theatrical experience that blows away box offices.

infernal affairs is superb and has that tense feeling that the departed misses on due to the timescale that the original spans, my only gripe with the departed is that it feels a tad rushed in comparison

i think i know what martin's problem his. that's his way of being cool because of difference
No, that's just my way of being. Not scrambling to conform to other people's standards. If you think that's cool, that's your choice :D

I know it must be shocking, though, that in this world there would be someone who thinks differently.

admit it, you think that makes you cool
Superior, yes. Which is kind of inevitable when you think you're right and everyone else is wrong. But it's a pragmatic feeling, it's not first deciding I feel superior and then doing my best to disagree, it's that I see people's opinions and I think they are wrong, which eventually ends in a conclusion that "how come it's so obvious to me and all these lamers don't see it, what's wrong with them?". So it's more in the direction of disorder in a sense, the way a doctor sees a patient. I tend to think a lot of people could see things clearly if they tried.

Cool? No. There's no way to be cool by being a rebel. The only rebels who are cool are those whose cause people sympathize with but don't want to engage in themselves. A sort of martyrism. A rebel in the true sense of one who finds no agreement with others will never be cool, because coolness comes out of identifying yourself with that person.

I hope that's a satisfying answer.
