Just watched Green Street Hooligans... and all I have to say is CLASS. What a fantastic movie for the closeted football supporter who dreams of living out his desires in another country supporting the club he has loved since a child. For an American football fan such as myself, this film really lit a fire up under my ass and made we want to join the football scene that is found in Europe.

The life of Matt in Green Street Hooligans is something that nobody wants to experiance, but at the same time a football fanatic does... the reoccuring theme of family keeps Matt at odds and you come to realize that family could be an extraneous group of individuals who share the same passion for something, such as West Ham United. It's absolutely intriguing how Matt becomes consumed by football politics as I could see myself being the same way. When you become a part of a family or group that supports a tradition, you will fight for that cause because without a "family" you have nothing... which is exactly what the main character in this film experianced. I felt so much compassion for this entire "family" that tears almost dripped out of my eyes when Pete died before the Millwall match. It not only portrays the human psyche regarding family, but also shows that some things are not worth dying for. However, then again, in some ways family is something worth dying for when nothing else is left. That's the whole conundrum of the human psyche.

When you have that urge to feel some sense of belonging, you will do what is necessary to uphold that feeling of being valued. Green Street shows you that family is indeed everything, but everything is not exactly worth dying for. This is the real problem we face in today's world.
