Well, this could very well be the end of the great Buffon at Juventus.

Now we need to splash out the big bucks for another top quality keeper. If we want to win anything this season we must find a top quality keeper for these four months, and perhaps after. Who knows what Buffon will be like after this injury, so might as well plan without him. Now we MUST look at every single possible player; Abbiati, Cudicini, Hildenbrand, and all the other top tier keepers because we cannot be stuck with an average player for almost half a season. This is one of our worst nightmares.

Lets just start from scratch and if the keeper we find is really good, just sell one of the two next summer.

Right shoulder, actually ;)

EDIT: Obviously no injury requiring surgery is good--but baseball pitchers...who use there shoulders much, much more...have come back from this kind of surgery (as a matter of fact, it's becoming rare when they don't come back.) If the injury is similar, I doubt we will see him back any time soon--probably next year:down:

I dont think so Andy, remember that he had a broken leg in the summer of 2000 and came back better than ever. IMO it's easier for a keeper to recover from an injury and find form than an outfield player.

I wouldn't throw in the towel on him yet. There's a chance that he could never truly recover. But I haven't seen anything that would leave me to believe he won't be our and the Italy NT's #1 keeper for years to come.

His rehab will be shorter than a baseball pitcher's....

Let's hope the 3-4 month window is correct :)

Actually, Zlatan's not the first person I've heard say that (sorry, Z :D ). But Z likes to gloat, so... ;)
Actually, I think I said it the moment I saw his injury in the match thread ;)

But you are most definitely spot on with the prognosis. For the kind of injury talked about, 2 months sounded unrealistic.

Yes, it does. To me it looks like a dislocated shoulder, which is a serious injury for a keeper. If it really is a dislocated shoulder, we could be looking at 3-4 months without him. Trezeguet had the same injury last year.

Bah, I'm better than the Juventus medical staff :D

Nieimi would be a decent target, I think. Can't see Juve going for anyone who hasn't played in Serie A before though.
good call, would be an excellent acquisition. Unfortunately he'd end up being so good and reliable that Buffon would be sat on the bench every week, would be a little weird. Miraculous how one of probably the world's top 3-5 keepers plays in the championship.

Injured Buffon needs surgery
Tuesday 16 August, 2005
Gianluigi Buffon will have to undergo surgery for a shoulder injury and won’t be back in action for at least three months, confirmed Juventus today.

The goalkeeper suffered the setback when he challenged Kaka during the 2-1 Trofeo Berlusconi defeat at the San Siro on Sunday evening.

Tests have shown the injury to be worse than previously thought and he will have to go under the knife in order to heal properly.

"Today Buffon completed the specialist tests on his right shoulder and it was decided that keyhole surgery was needed to repair the damage suffered during Sunday’s match against Milan," read a statement on the Bianconeri website.

"The operation will be performed by Professors Flavio Quaglia, Riccardo Minola and Roberto Ravera on Wednesday August 17.

"The final prognosis will be revealed after the surgery, but we can already predict a three-month absence from the playing field."

This is a bitter blow for Juventus, who must now find a replacement goalkeeper who can give the kind of guarantees that current No 2 Antonio Chimenti does not.

It is also a serious setback for Italy Coach Marcello Lippi, who finds himself with relatively inexperienced goalkeepers Morgan De Sanctis, Flavio Roma and Matteo Guardalben.
