Last season’s Scudetto triumph led football writers from far and wide to suggest that Juventus possessed one of the strongest midfields in the business.
With Pirlo pulling the strings in the centre of the park, flanked by the energy of Vidal and Marchisio, the Bianconeri proved a match for anyone in the midfield battle.
And judging by the statistics, Juventus have picked up exactly where they left off.
Out of the ten different goalscorers so far – weighing in with a total of 17 goals - five of these are midfielders: Pirlo (3), Vidal (2), Asamoah, Giaccherini and Marchisio (1).
Their contribution represents 47.1% of the team’s overall haul, a statistic which bears a close resemblance to last season’s goal distribution. The Bianconeri ended their Scudetto-winning campaign by scoring 68 goals, with 30 of these (44.1%) coming from the midfield.
Even though the Bianconeri are just seven games into the new campaign, the figure has already improved from last time out.
And while Marchisio has toiled to find the finishing touch that produced three goals at this point last season, Pirlo has stepped up to the mantle with devastating effect.
In 2011/12, the midfield genius was made to wait until February before opening his Bianconeri account. This time, however, he finds himself on three goals following trademark free-kicks against Parma, Roma and Siena.
