Don't know what to make of this transfer.

I like Bastos and think he be a good LM in a four man midfield.

However, his signing does tend to suggest, to my mind, a plan to play 4-4-2 - which is unlikely to work well with Pirlo in the team.
He's been playing on the right and left hand side of a 5 man midfield in Lyon the past couple of years. So bringing him in does not necessarily mean you guys are going for a 4-4-2.

could he handle the defensive duties so well to occupy the left back spot in an advanced role?

kinda like this:

lichtsteiner---bonucci---chiellini-----
---------------------------------bastos
----------melo----pirlo----------------
------------------------marchiso------
krasic-------------aguero-------------
---------------matri-------------------

or was it more like 4-5-1 where he was the left/right wing forward/wide midfielder?

He started out his career as a leftback, but he was never a good defender, only when he was turned into a winger at Lille did he start showing his true worth, so no, i would definitely not recommend him as a leftback, he isn't a good enough defender. At Lyon he played as a right, sometimes left winger in a 4-5-1.

with Afellay in place of Krasic, Marchisio a bit further back to cover for Bastos and Pirlo a bit more forward in front of Melo & Marchisio, and I would give it 9/10

Fred how effective would Bastos be in a 4-3-3? as the LW.
Well i personally think being a winger in a 4-3-3 is quite similar to being a winger in a 4-5-1, you just have to play more advanced. So basically i think he'd have no problems at all playing one the left hand side of a 3 man attack.

i don't see afellay being better in that kinda setup then milos. krasic's performance will improve next season (probably better than his first half season) with a similar threat coming from the other side of the pitch. marchisio can't be kept back too much, he can have an impact offensively with runs into the box and still manage to keep the balance defensively.

Do you watch Lyon often? How do you rate him? Strengths and weaknesses.
I have kind of assumed you watch Ligue 1 the most.

We should got Afellay when he left PSV, dunt think Barca going to let him go now.
He is a good player to cover various positions in midfield.

I used to :D. Didn't watch much football since February when the events in Libya started.

Before that i was a close follower of the Ligue of course, so i've seen plenty of Bastos ever since his Lille days when he started out as a leftback. Well, the reason he has such a big reputation is his last season with Lille when he was one of the best players in the Ligue, the guy had an amazing season. Lyon then bought him for a significant amount of money by Ligue standards, he has never emulated his last season with Lille in the two years he's been in Lyon, but he's been a good player for them nonetheless. He's a good winger imo, he's quite fast, he's a decent dribbler, he's got decent technique and he's a very good shooter of the ball, has a really strong shot on him. His main weakness i'd say is his consistency, he does go missing for chunks of the season, it could get quite frustrating sometimes.
