I will be turning 40 in September, and my love for music and appreciation for the craft was shown to me by my grandmother when I was 5 years old. I remember sitting with her at her house when I would come home from schol, and she would make me hamburgers on toast with mustard and we would listen to music. Although her English was extremely poor, her love of music and harmony allowed her to overcome the fact that she really had no idea what any of the artists were saying, she simply loved the music and the melody.

She turned me on to jazz at a very young age, so my love for all things Parker, Coltraine, Monk, Davis, Brubeck were the groundwork for everything else in my life.

Then one day, she wanted me to listen to an album by this group of young black men that had a lead singer who was a "piccolo bambino". It was the jackson 5, and the songs that I listened to with her off of that greatest hits album stuck with me forever. "I want you back, ABC, Never can say Goodbye, Mama's Pearl, Stop the love you save". All of these songs and all of the songs by the Jacksons and Michael have stuck with me ever since. I listen to Can you Feel It, Shake your body (Down to the Ground), Dancing Machine constantly. They are always in my car.

Michael Jackson's music is a micorcosm of my life. I can tell you where I was, what I was doing the first time I heard his songs on the radio. His music is timeless. Everyone knows the words to any Michael Jackson song, whether you liked his music or not.

I saw Michael in Hartford, Connecticut during the "Bad" tour, and like everyone else in that arena, regardless of how tough or macho you like to think that you are, I cried the whole time through, and felt no shame in it. That was the overwhelming feeling you got when you felt that you were surrounded by unbridled joy and bearing witness to shear greatness.

All my life of loving music, going on 35 years, he is one of the few artists that have been with me throughout my entire life, and now he is gone, and I am gutted beyond belief.

I will miss you Michael, and how I wish you had the chance to show the world why we all fell in love with you oh so many years ago.

RIP. You are not alone
I listened to that song last night and cried. The lyrics hit you hard, it was like he wrote it just for this moment. I remember growing up in the 80s as a kid my two older brothers listened to him all the time. I still remember those precious memories bonding with my bros in front of the old school MTV waiting for his videos. Shit, I remember the 90s watching Pop Up Video of his songs on VH1. His videos were in another galaxy just as his songs were, the guy as goofy as he became was a genius.

I think now the man can finally honestly rest in peace with is Maker. It is too bad that he was unable to complete his tour, one last time. I don't know about you Sergio but I have been glued to the TV just paying my respects. I was out driving this morning and almost every radio station his playing either MJ or Jackson 5, truly remarkable. The man literally moved the world. My cousins in Germany emailed me as soon as they heard asking what happened. This is huge, so sad to see him go so soon.

At his funeral they need to play You Are Not Alone and let the tears flow.

I just wanted one more chance to see him, even if it was in London. I had told my wife that if I had won the lottery for the tickets that I was going to take an equity line out on my house just to finance the trip.

Some people are just too young to realize the impact that he had on the world, not just the world of music, but the entire world

This is why I am doing whatever it takes to get tickets to both Paul McCartney shows at Fenway Park in August

I agree, losing someone of this icon status opened my eyes. I am going to start pushing to see these stars before their time comes. I never got to see MJ live, I would have done anything to do so. He is going to be missed. I need to find a way to tape his funeral and make a copy of it. I think it would be interesting to watch in 20 years when I have mini-me's that enjoy his music.

It's sad I know, but I am stuck to the TV just like I was when Princess Diana died in the crash. What channel you watching Sergio?

I'm not watching TV right now. I am at work. I was up all night watching it, anyway

Excellent post.

I remember my first MJ concert like it were yesterday.October 12th 1997,I was still in highschool & i used all my money i saved for the tickets. It was at the Johannesburg stadium & it was completely packed, people were trying their best to jump the fence, bribe officials it was utter chaos. The one thing ive noticed with his concert as to other artists is that he ahd EVERBODY'S attention, nobody goofing off,no teenagers trying to start fights it was absolutely amazing.Your absolutely right about the crying part as everybody had tears,i was taken aback by how everybody was unified & the mood allround was harmonious & friendly.

The history world tour was money well spent & no doubt the best concert ive ever had the priviledge of attending.57/8k +/- packed stadium & no violence occured, thats one thing ive never heard of here is SA.

The great thing about the concert I went to was that, although I am a big fan of open-stadium concerts (Metallica, AC/DC, Madonna,Prince, U2, just to name a few that I've been to in stadiums), this one was the 2nd show of a three night stay in Hartford, where it was an indoor arena that seats 16000 people. So there was a sense of intimacy as well, which was just mind blowing to me

great post, brother

I also grew up listening to Michael's music, and when I hear the songs from the Thriller album, it brings back great memories of growing up in the early to mid 1980's.

Obviously, I thought as time went on that he became a wee-bit too bizarre (he was whiter than me, with straighter hair), but I still respected his ability to entertain the masses. He will be sadly missed

Talk about bizarre, this is no lie, but when I was on my way to work yesterday at 2 pm est, I was listening to the 80's music on my Ipod, and guess what the last song that I heard before I walked into work ??

Beat It- Michael Jackson

A few hours later, I got the news....

I could just imagine the vibe must have felt like your own private performance.

He was the man.:agree:

James Brown. December 25th. Aaliyah August 25th. Left Eye April 25th. Micheal Jackson June 25th...
That was the saddest shit ever, she was a real amazing talent & in all honesty i dont know think the likes of Rihanna & Beyonce would have surpassed her record sales wise if she were still alive.Too bad it wasnt Faith Evans & Lil Kim that went down with that plane.

Brilliant post mate. Simply brilliant.

I still cant believe he is gone. I will never get to see him live which is heartbreaking. He was a genuis, he was the last true great world superstar, which everyone loved all over the world. There will never be another MJ.
