Messina and Torino expelled from Serie A
July 15, 2005
www.worldsoccer.com

Messina and Torino have been expelled from Serie A because of the poor state of their finances, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) decided on Friday.

Both clubs have already indicated they will appeal against any ban in the courts, raising the possibility that the start of the new season, set for August 28, could be disprupted.

“I'm not optimistic but I'm realistic and I think that we have all of the tools in hand and all of the prerequisites to remain in Serie A,” Torino chairman Tilli Romero said.

A number of other clubs from Italy's lower divisions will also be barred from starting the season because of financial problems. They Perugia and Salernitana from Serie B.

If Messina lose their appeal, Bologna, who were relegated from Serie A after losing a play-off against Parma, could take their place.

“We will fight our case,” said Bologna's president Giuseppe Gazzoni.

Treviso, who finished fifth in Serie B last season, could take the place of Torino if their appeal fails.

Not good news for our Toro rivals.

Toro & Messina barred from Serie A
    Friday 15 July, 2005
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) have today expelled Torino and Messina from Serie A due to their financial problems.

Whispers in Italy over the last few days had suggested that the pair did not meet the requirements needed to be registered for the new campaign, and the FIGC confirmed the news on Friday.

However, today’s decision is not final and all clubs who have been barred have three appeal processes that they could still pursue.

"I'm not optimistic but I'm realistic," stated Torino President Attilio Romero, whose side won promotion last term.

"I think that we have all of the tools in hand and all of the prerequisites to remain in Serie A."

Messina, who comfortably survived the drop last season, are also confident that they have the necessary paperwork to resolve their problems.

"I knew this decision was coming," said Messina President Pietro Franza. "But I want to underline that we have great faith in the bodies who we will now turn to.

"We are certain that we can continue with our adventure in Serie A."

Bologna, following their relegation, are in pole position to replace Messina should today’s judgement stand.

Torino’s supposed exit would allow Treviso, who finished fifth in Serie B, to take their place because Perugia – who lost to Toro in the Play-Off Final – have their own problems.

The Umbrian outfit and Salernitana are currently not registered for the Second Division, while a host of Serie C sides are in real trouble too.

It’s unclear at this stage when we will know the final line-ups of each Division and therefore the fixtures for the new campaign. Serie A is set to kick-off on August 28.

I'm not happy for any of them to go down. Messina was a good small team and I was loving the prospect of having the derby back again this season. :groan:

Its a terrible day... Not jus for the teams involved but for serie A

This damages Serie a's allready fragile standing in world football... The league is currently at an alltime low on the world stage what with various scandals, doping accussations, financial irregularities, violence, racism etc the league is in trouble....

Its allready starting to feel the bite with many countries for next season dropping serie a coverage or cutting it back heavily... Those that are continueing are willing to only pay much reduced sums which has massive implications for the clubs...

Unfortuantely this is only the begginning with many clubs throughout the divisions in serious dificulties...

A black day for serie a and the whole of italian football

But at the same time, clubs have to been on same playing field when it comes to finances. Can't expect favours.
Indeed... I dont disagree with why they have been denied or the fact that they have been... But the fact is it is a terrible day for italian football... especially in its allready fragile state

Perugia and Salernitana were also deemed ineligible for Serie B.
No less than 16 clubs face relegation from Serie C

I dont think so, its unfair on the fans that they have the joy of promotion and now and they can play in Serie A, which is what they deserve after a long hard year, plus wouldnt they get more money ie help them with their finacial situation if they were in Serie A?

Anyone familiar with the history of Italian football, even those who hate Toro, will be saddened by this. Torino is one of the greats of Italy and the fact they play in the Second Division is unacceptable, but the news that they don't have enough money to register is a body blow. How could this have been allowed to happen. At least at Lazio and Parma and Fiorentina we can easily spot the criminality and mismanagement. But at Toro, you have to wonder who is to blame and why didn't somebody figure this out long ago?

i have a feeling both will be playing in Serie A next season following the appeals.

Does anyone know the amount of debt these clubs are in? because Messina have sold Parisi which must have helped the finances slightly.
