Month out for Del Piero

Alessandro Del Piero’s injury is less serious than first thought - even if he will still be out of action for a month.

There were fears that the Juventus ace could be sidelined for up to 50 days after he sustained a calf injury.

Yet tests carried out on the No 10 earlier today have suggested that he should be back in around four weeks.

Del Piero limped out of the 1-0 loss against Deportivo La Coruna on Tuesday amidst fears that his season could virtually be over.

Had the problem been a bit more serious then he could have been a major doubt for the 2004 European Championships.

However, he may now be back in mid April which should give him enough time to fully recover ahead of the Portuguese Finals.

His return has already been pencilled in for the Week 29 clash against Lazio or the Week 30 Serie A game at Parma on April 18.

Even if he's only set to recover 1 day before the plane leaves for Portugal, Trap will take him. Whether he lost the #10 or whatever, he's still Italy's golden-boy. See how much effort went into taking Beckham to Japan? Methinks the same thing will happen to Del Piero.

Fit or not, Alex is going to Portugal.

That's really a bit of wishful thinking...With Cassano in the squad, Del Piero doesn't have to go to Portugal, and I don't see Trap wasting a spot on him.

I don't think that there will be a big uproar. If I were Trap, I wouldn't take DP even if he were healthy. Del Piero has never been a great one for the Azzuri, an dmost non-Juve fans see that clearly.

btw it wasn't really wishful thinking, since i wouldn't lose sleep if DP was left out of the squad, but i just thought that's what the situation was

It could really go either way. Maybe I'm judging Italian public opinion wrong. But, from what I hear, Del Piero is not a national hero...

That's the most ridiculous comment I have ever heard. Yes DP doesnt perform well for Juve, but for Azzurri he is a key figure. Just look at the Euro 2004 qualification. He scored in every game he was played in EXCEPT one or two. He scored 5 goals in the qualification and was one of Italy's better players. Not taking DP would be a huge blow to the Azzurri.

In qualification, yes, but qualification is over. Del Piero has never shown up for the tourney's.

Dont get ahead of yourself, when has Totti shifted up for the "Tourneys". We all saw what he did at WC2002. DP was great at Euro, except when he missed a couple of chances in the final.

Totti was one of Italy's best players against Korea. Every time he got the ball, you could sense something dangerous happening. He set up lots of good chances for his team-mates, and that second yellow card wasn't a dive (well it might have been, but the defender did make contact with him after he hit the ball)

actually, that goal was useless anyway because the score of the two teams in our group was to Italy's advantege.

It only turned out to be useless after the matches were finished, but during the match every Italy fan was praying for their team to score a goal, and Del Piero delivered when called upon

When did I say that Totti was key to the squad? I didn't. In fact, I think that I referenced Cassano as being Del Piero's replacement...
